Toxoplasmosis worry

Hi,

Today I made a bacon sandwich and used a metal utensil to pick the bacon up and put on grill. I then put them to one side. Then when I wanted to turn the bacon I thought I would wash the utensil. So I poured washing up liquid on it and washed it over but not with a sponge (as the only one I had was very dirty) so I just kind of cleaned it with my hands.

I then wiped it dry with a tea towel. However then I used the same tea towel for opening the oven etc.....

Now I am really worried I have infected myself with toxoplasmosis.....!!

My worry is that I used the tea towel after I had dried the utensil and what if I hadn't cleaned it enough and it still had raw bacon on it which I transferred to my hands before eating the sandwich.......

What do you think? :-(

I think you are overthinking. A lot!

You get toxo generally from animal faeces.

I think you are massively overthinking Grin. Most people have had toxoplasmosis before they are pregnant and it's very unlikely you would get it in the way you described.

Relax, have a small beer, and breathe!

ladymia · 23/03/2013 18:03

Hmm you're going to be OK

Bluebella · 23/03/2013 18:11

Thank you for replies. Really hope I am just being paranoid. X

You are. Honestly Grin

Thought it was more linked to cat poo? Could be wrong, I'm sure you will be fine. Chill!!!

Teaandflapjacks · 24/03/2013 11:17

Actually you can get it from so many sources - highest risk is I think unwashed veg and salad, then raw meat - mostly pork - and rather a lot over a prolonged time, then cat poo - a medic would know better? I live in germany where here they actually eat minced raw pork - like steak tatar. I have eaten heaps of the stuff, had a toxiplasmosis test at the start of the pg (normal in germany) and don't have the antibodies, so I now eat cooked meat, wash all veg and salad, but that is about it. You are probably more likely to get it from unwashed vegetables - and what you have just described it completely impossible. Honestly! Don't worry and enjoy your sarnie. Smile

Teaandflapjacks · 24/03/2013 11:23

actually I think cat poo is the highest risk - veg etc is from soil, then raw meat bacteria in the meat.

And breathe...

You will be fine.

Do you not have monthly blood taken to check for toxo?

ExpatAl · 24/03/2013 15:07

I have to have monthly tests for toxo and cat poo apparently isn't the highest risk. Highest is dirty veg/salad and then meat not cooked through.
