If I can't take medicine, how do I get rid of my cough and get my voice back?

Can anyone help?
I've got a cough that is affecting my chest plus I'm losing my voice. Of course the pharmacist said I wasn't allowed to take anything. I'm sure my mw mentioned that I can have paracetamol so I have been doing. Has anyone got any other suggestions? I need to be able to clear my chest enough to be able to sleep at night.
As least it is only a cough. How do pregnant women manage when they have something worse like flu?!

I was told I could take glycerol cough stuffa nd cough pastilles. Good old honey and lemon is good too

My DH makes me a warm lemonade with a dollop of honey when I have a cough (which I did do, really badly, both pregnancies!)

Dr also told me i could take paracetamol

hot lemon jelly is good, u could add a dollop of runny honey too.

Also, worth reading the back of a packet of vocalzones too. We have some here but out of the packet, great for sore throats, altho not sure u can have them in pregnancy, wouldn't like to say!

Lemon and honey.
Otherwise all you can do is let it run its course. I don't honestly think the medicines are any good anyway.

I've got a cough too so I can sympathise. Let's hope they clear up quickly eh?

if you see your GP he could prescribe you a pholcodiene linctus, which I am sure is safe in preg.
IMO pharmasist always tend to be over cautious, you gp could prescribe you something that will sort you out.

In answer to your last question HopingCat, they suffer. I had very bad sinusitis during my last pregnancy and couldn't take anything (anything safe for pg women I am allergic to) and it lasted more days than I care to remember.

Hope you feel better soon.

i got sinusitis so badly i got an infection and had to take ABs and prescribed decongestants. i was at about 34 weeks when it got really, really bad.

I took soluble paracetamol when I was pg and had repeated chest infections. Sounds gross, but gargle with it and then swallow. Paracetamol then gets to the sore bits in your throat as you gargle and swallow.

Inhaling steam will help (I'm not sure if you can put Olbas Oil/Vicks etc in it when you're pregnant, does anyone else know?) Also sleeping a bit propped up (that helps with heartburn too).

I had the worst cough in my life when I was pregnant with ds1 - it's because your immune system is suppressed I think, everything lays you low. I had to 'sleep' sitting up on the settee downstairs - it was horrible. Hope you feel better soon.

Yes, you can rub Vicks in you should also be able to melt it in hot, not boiling water, and inhale. Works wonders if you have a stuffy nose, should clear your airwaves, but am not sure if it will help with getting your voice back.

Get well soon.

Thanks to everyone for advice. My cough is improving but I've developed a sore throat and cold now as well as still having only a very quiet voice. I'll certainly be trying a few of these suggestions.
