How long does 12 week scan take??

My parents don't know that I'm pregnant yet (only want to tell them after we get the all clear (fingers crossed) after our first scan.

My folks are going on holiday and are staying at ours on sun evening, leaving for holiday (in uk) Monday morning. My (secret) scan is Monday morning at 8:30 and I was wondering how long they take so I could stall my parents and told them that day before they left. As it'd be a lovely start to there holiday after a really crappy few years for them and they are desperate to be grand parents.

I'm having the combined scan/blood test (bloods taken already) for downs and I believe that they calculate all this at the scan. Anyone else had this type of 12 week scan and could tell be how long it took?

Many thanks

Won't take long as long as you go in on time but at 8.30 you're probably first in the queue. Sometimes baby can be in an awkward position to get the measurement they need for downs screening but if that's the case they'll probably ask you to go for a walk/ jump up and down or even come back another day. You then usually have to wait a couple of weeks for the results though. But the scan is quick (if baby in right place) and you'll be able to tell your parents pretty quick. Good luck and congrats!

Fantastic news! Thanks for that!! Yes I'm hoping that I won't be waiting long...... I've been busting to tell my parents (and everyone) for ages!!

Mine took a while, 15' mins for scan but then we had to wait about 45 mins for the result....

I'm thinking that as long as it didn't take much more than an hour then I'm sure I can make up some excuse to keep my parents there (luckily I only live 5 minutes from hospital)

Congrats on your pregnancy! Scan takes about 15-30 mins depending on baby position. Blood results take two weeks on nhs or half an hour-ish if you're going private. Good luck and enjoy telling your parents! Smile

Depending on baby's position it could take 5-20 mins or even longer. Depends if you want to wait to get your combined results before telling your parents. You'll definitely have the nuchal result immediately afterwards but most people get a phone call within 2-3 days if high risk and low risk results in the post within 1?2 weeks.

I know you've had bloods done, but I'm pretty sure you'll have to have new bloods taken as they need to be done at the same time as the scan. I had booking bloods, but further ones done at the combined screening.

Hope all goes well tomorrow and you get to enjoy seeing your parents faces!

Mine was about 15 minutes and got the combined test results there and then. Good luck!

Consider the possibility that they may not find the Nuchal fold.
My scan was at 9am, so I assumed I would be first/early - wrong! There were about four people in front of us and already running about 30 minutes late. The sonographer couldn't find the Nuchal fold and sent me off to drink water etc, then scanned me again. They then wanted to check my blood pressure. I was in for about 20 mins being scanned but in the hospital for two hours altogether.

PS. Oh yes - midwife also said they have to do the bloods on the day as the ones taken previously are not taken late enough. I didn't have to have any taken in the end as they didn't find what they wanted to see anyway.
