When do you get results for downs screen?

Hi everyone....

As a newbie to this pregnancy malarkey, I have a question....

When do you get the result for your downs screen? Do they give you your "risk rating" at your 12 week scan (they have the blood test results there as well) or do you have to wait until your midwife has looked at both the results and contacts you later?

As I'm in my 30's I'm slightly anxious and am not planning on telling parents/family etc until we get the all clear.

Many thanks x Envy

We got the measurements at the 12 week scan and then did a blood test straight after and will get the results in the post within 2 weeks if low risk and a call sooner if there's a concern.

Same as above Smile

Hi, it depends what area you're in - loads of the ladies on my AN club thread had NT measurements at 12 weeks, but in my area they don't do the measurements, just give you a risk ratio from blood tests (which is done over 2 tests, one around 12 and one around 15).

If everything's ok then you get a letter within 2 weeks, if you're high risk then you get a phone call within 5 days.

Best person to ask is probably your midwife - mine gave me a general number to call for any queries and reassured me that it was fine to call any time !

Mine arrived in the post 10 days after my scan/blood test.

I was told to have my bloods taken at 10w +2/3 (although that falls on a bank holiday weekend so will be done 10w + 5. My scan is booked for 12w + 4 so I was assuming that I would get the 'all clear' and 'go ahead and get excited about your pregnancy' there and then!

I'm glad I asked the question to prepare myself for the wait afterwards Hmm

Thanks guys

It depends on the specific hospital. At my local hospital you have the bloods taken up to 2 weeks before the 12 week scan and at the end of the scan you are presented with your combined risk result (based on bloods and nuchal/other measurements). This was all done by the sonographer.

Also, if you go private (I use the FMC on Harley Street) you can often get everything done on the sane day, at FMC my bloods were taken and half an hour later I was called in for the scan and the combined results were then available at the end of the 45 minute scan.

I am aware as others have said of hospitals who either don't donthe combined bloods and nuchal screening or make you wait/only give a screen positive/negative result, it's a bit of a post code lottery. Speak to your midwife and she will let you know how it works in your hospital.

Good luck with the results, chances are everything will be fine.

I had the blood test beforehand and then got the combined results at the scan.

Congrats on the pregnancy - and good luck!

We did blood test before scan, then sonographer put those together with scan results and told us the overall results.

massagegirl · 10/03/2013 21:31

I was told I was high risk based on the nuchal alone. The bloods contributed to a 1 in .... Chance but could not change the high risk factor. All is fine with the baby now!

You won't get an all clear unless you're high risk in which case you will be offerered amnio or cvs. My result came back as 1 in 9000 chance which is very low but a but irrelevant if my baby ends up being the 1.

riskit4abiskit · 11/03/2013 20:17

my mw said if it was high risk they would phone within a week, lower risk and they would send a letter within a week or so (was scanned last fri)
