If you measured big did you go on to have a big baby?

My midwife measured my bump today and although she didn't seem concerned I was measuring around 2cm ahead.

No. I was measuring 3 to 4 cm ahead but DD was average size. Fundal height is a rough guide to fetal growth so don't panic about giving birth to humga-baby just yet. You might get offered a growth scan but even those are not particularly accurate.

windywoo26 · 08/03/2013 07:07

I measured 3-4 cms ahead from 29 weeks with DS. He ended up being 8lb 4 when he arrived 2 weeks early. I wouldn't worry about it. Better for them to think baby is big and monitor you rather than the opposite

ZuleikaD · 08/03/2013 07:45

No, they just measure you to check baby is still growing, it's not a guide to eventual size.

Flisspaps · 08/03/2013 07:48

I did Grin

2.5cm over from about 28 weeks.

DS was 11lb 7oz.

Up to 2cm +/- is normal though, so you're within that. If they're concerned they'll send you for a growth scan.

Littlemissexpecting · 08/03/2013 07:52

My mw said yesterday that +/- 3cm is considered normal so not to worry.
Remember it could be fluid or your placenta is anterior making you bigger rather than actual baby

Flisspaps · 08/03/2013 08:05

Littlemiss I think the variation in normal varies from trust to trust - here it's definitely 2.5cm! I remember saying to DH that if we lived elsewhere I'd still have been in the bounds of normal, even with enormobaby Grin

Ledkr · 08/03/2013 08:06

I measured 47 at 36 weeks. I was warned of big baby, she was 7 13 it was all fluid, gallons of it. I could hardly walk at the end or breathe!

OhMyNoReally · 08/03/2013 08:12

I was told baby would be small for dates, they were so worried they kept sending me for scans near the end as they thought ds had stopped growing. Scans showed no problems I was a bit Hmm with the whole fundal height thing.

Ds was born a day before due date 8lbs. Grin

BurnThisDiscoDown · 08/03/2013 08:15

I measured big but DS was only 6lb 11. I'm short though, so there was nowhere for the baby to go apart from out. I always wondered how they distinguished baby belly from
cake belly too! Smile

ditsydoll · 08/03/2013 10:38

Im short and also have an anterior placenta so perhaps that was the reason for the extra 2cm then..

I'm average size 5'6 ds1 was measuring slightly over he was 2 wk late and 6ib 8. Ds2 was measuring slightly under and was born more or less on time weighing 9ib. My cousin at the same time as me was measuring 4.5cm over everyone said her baby was going to be huge and mine small, she had her weighing a very normal 7.15. I wouldnt worry tbh xx

MammaCici · 08/03/2013 11:52

I think they measure the fundal height at each visit to see that you are growing at a steady enough pace. If they are concerned about your growth pattern you'd be sent for more tests. The height doesn't seem to relate very well to the actual baby size. And on labour day, it's the head circumference that matters most to me!
