Continually ill! Anyone else?

Am 20+ weeks with DC2 and have had pretty much non-stop minor illness throughout this pregnancy. Dreadful morning sickness at first (but I seem to have got over that now, thank goodness) and I've had colds nearly continuously for the last three months - as soon as I finally get clear of one, I get another the following week. It doesn't help that DS moved from a CM to nursery a month ago and has been bringing home all sorts of bugs since! The trouble is, not only are my colds much more frequent and drawn-out, but they seem to be more severe too: after lingering on for a couple of weeks, they turn into a sinus infection or an ear infection, so I just feel knackered and crap all the time. Sad The current cold turned into laryngitis (so I lost my voice completely over the weekend) and now seems to be developing into my second ear infection in six weeks. I was given amoxycillin last time, but I feel uneasy about taking lots of ABs in pregnancy - but otoh, I can't take anything else except paracetamol and that hardly touched the ear infection pain last time.

Sorry for the whinge-fest! Not quite sure what I'm hoping to achieve with this thread apart from having a therapeutic moan. Has anyone else been ill like this (with non-pg related illnesses, I mean) and does it get better? DS was born in early winter, and I was in rude health throughout, so maybe this is just a crappy time of year to be pregnant?! Any advice about the ear infection and how to avoid getting more in future?

Full sympathies. I've been constantly ill with one thing or another throughout this preg, now I'm 20 weeks and wondering what will be next. Have already had norovirus and have just literally recovered from 3 weeks of bronchitis. Immune system takes such a battering when pg :( my mum is a naturopath and makes me take probiotic powder and high doses of fizzy C for my immunity. I also don't have any kids if mine at nursery so I'm hoping this will help me not catch other bugs.

Yup, I've had one cold or virus after another since October. It stinks!

ScottyDoc · 04/03/2013 07:46

And yes I think it's winter. Dd was born in late summer and pg with her was great, felt good and had no illnesses that I can think of. Same with ds. This baby I've just felt crap with and I think it's def the cold dark winters, lack of vitamin D and being stressed in the house with the other two if we can't get out due to rain. Can only say thank god we're halfway through, just rest rest rest, lots of fresh sir and eat fresh foods and home cooked stuff. It will all be worth it!!

You've got my sympathy! I've been constantly ill too, with one thing literally after the other. It is draining to say the least ...

Thanks for the sympathy, especially after all my self-indulgent whingeing Blush. Sorry to hear that others have also been experiencing the same, but hope it will get better once the weather improves! I've asked to work from home today, which should help a bit, and I'll go out to get some naice (healthy) things from Waitrose at lunchtime. Thank god we're going on holiday for 5 days next week!

I think it's the curse of the second pregnancy. Last time I just got my standard 2 colds over the winter. This time I'm like you, they've pretty much been back to back, probably because DS bring them home from nursery, and they take AGES to go away and the symptoms are much more severe. It sucks!

TheCokeMachine · 04/03/2013 16:46

Yes, me too. I have had seven different colds since October - DD brings them from nursery. I have also had terrible morning sickness which still isn't completely gone. I seem to have avoided the throat infection that DD had last week but now have a bad case of viral conjunctivitis to make up for it. Bleurgh!
