Yellow discharge (TMI alert!), cramping - unusual? Infection?

So, im 14 weeks pg. I went to the loo this afternoon and there was a small blob of thick yellow discharge in my underwear. It didnt smell and I've had no itching. I've also been well aquainted with thrush over the years and it didnt seem like that.

I wasn't massively worried and almost didnt do anything about it but as i had a threatened miscarriage less than 2 weeks ago i thought I'd check with my midwife who suggested I call EPU just in case. So I called them and they asked if I had cramping. I said I've had cramping and little jabby pains on and off through the whole pg so far. This seemed to concern them although I thought it was meant to be normal?? Anyway I went in so they could check for UTI and the nurse I saw though yellow discharge was unusual and a potential sign of infection. She was going to do a cervical swab but I was v anxious about having speculum, poking around my cervix etc so soon after my big scary bleed. Also ive had cervical cone biopsy in the past, so I'm rather paranoid about my cervix as it is. So she did a low vaginal swab instead. She said if discharge gets worse or pain increases to go back for a cervical swab instead which is more thorough.

I suppose what I want to ask is - is yellow discharge unusual in pg? And are cramps and little niggly pains unusual too? The cramps can feel quite intense and can be concerning but they never have me doubled over in pain and come and go.

Do these symptoms sound like an infection?

I had yellow discharge somewhere around 15 weeks and I've had loads of niggles and pains, and at 28 weeks now all is fine, so I wouldn't worry too much. But it is good you got yourself checked, at least when the results come back you can take comfort from it. All the best Smile

Thanks Buttery. I have had some strange responses from very experienced medical professionals lately so a bit unsure sometimes. I've had a few that flat-out refuse to accept that cramps in pg are anything other than a sign of something wrong. Even tnough lots of women seem to have them. Also when I had my bleed, not a single person from paramedics to a&e nurses to doctors said to me that bleeding doesn't necessarily mean miscarriage. But after I had my bleed all if a sudden loads of my friends, colleagues, family etc were telling me they either had the same themselves or knew someone else it had happened to. Lots if anecdotal evidence that for some, bleeding doesn't necessarily mean the worse.

Perhaps the NHS way is to always assume worst-case scenario and don't get anyone's hopes up?

I have had this all the way through my pregnancy (32 weeks now). At times it's even got a green tinge Hmm I asked my midwife about it. She said its totally normal. As long as it doesn't smell offensive or itch, she says its ok. I have had to invest in pant liners though!

kittykatsforever · 01/03/2013 20:12

Same as having a little faith baby^ I've had it probably once a week/ few weeks from 11 ish weeks , don't think I've had much for the past month ( 27wks) but it was like EWCM and had a green tinge at times I've seen quite a few threads with people worrying about it thinking cervical plug aswell but think its just a normal pregnancy thing and fine unless with accompanying symptoms like itching etc

Maybe I spoke too soon. Been spotting brown discharge :(

Gingerbread I have also had brown spotting about 5 times this pregnancy too, turns out I have a errosion on outside of womb but they only discovered that at last hospital visit about 20wks, you are past the point if high mc worry so try not to worry, honistly all these different things can be very normal for some people

kittykatsforever · 02/03/2013 06:54

Oh and as it happens my first lot if brown spotting was coincidently at 14wks aswell

Christelle2207 · 02/03/2013 12:06

I am 18 weeks and have had regular yellowy discharge since before bfp - looks similar to EWCM that you get at fertile time of the month, have been told by mw, gp and friends with babies that it is fine as long as it doesn't smell off.

Hmmm, I had a yellowish discharge, quite thick, and just ignored it as I'd heard it was normal. My midwife picked up leucocytes (sp??) in my urine test, and after a short course of antibiotics the discharge cleared up completely. I hadn't had any itching, but had felt a few mild cramps (not painful, more tugging), and felt a little more tired than usual.

Based on this I'd guess you have a low grade infection of some kind.

Thanks worsester. I've had more thorough swabs taken just now at EPU. So if there's anything there that'll pick it up
