Wondering whether I've been a right idiot!!

Well there's two things I could have been an idiot about...

  1. I've had a delivery at work this morning, about an hour ago into our storage room at the back of the office, in short to get the delivery into this room there's a heavy metal roller shutter, that needs to be lifted, I work for a small company only 3 employees, me in admin, our director & a sales guy, director was out & sales guy was in, I asked sales guy nicely if he could go & open the shutter for delivery, he said yeah in a min, a few minutes later he still hadn't got up to open it & I could see delivery guy was getting impatient so I went to try & open it myself, before becoming pregnant I would do this but it was always a struggle to lift, I was trying to open it with difficulty so shouted for sales guy to give me a hand, he didn't bother responding, in the end I managed to get it halfway up as he came in to help. When I asked why he hadn't sooner he said it wasn't his job & he didn't want to get dirty, (he's a pompous tw** who thinks anything manual is below him, he also knows I'm nearly 20 weeks pregnant) anyway after all this I have I think pulled my back but more worryingly the left underneath side of my bump is now hurting, like a dull pain but I am worried I may have hurt my baby. I know I am probably completely over-reacting but this couldn't have done any harm to my baby could it?
  1. For the last week I have been craving raw cookie dough, well finally brought a pre-made pack of dough & before the delivery incident without giving it any thought I ate half the pack, now I know this is so unbelievably unhealthy but afterwards I was looking at the pack & noticed that it had egg in, (idiotic for not thinking about this sooner) it does say "pasteurised free range whole egg" but obviously it was raw dough. Have I been a complete moron & ate something that could seriously cause harm?

Thanks in advance for your responses. Sitting here feeling like an idiot waiting patiently for someone to tell me I am one.

I think at 20 weeks you're fairly safe in terms of the cookie dough. I'm sure the books would all say not to eat it but frankly you're at a point where the egg is unlikely to make a difference. That's IMO obviously - I'm not an expert.

As for hurting the baby, my understanding is that the no lifting rule is there to protect you. Your joints and muscles are in a bit of flux at the moment so if you were to lift something badly (and that was 'too heavy') its your back, legs, pelvis etc that would be damaged, not the baby's.

It's absolutely normal to have mini freak outs about stuff like this but please try not to stress.

Oh and tell your coworker he's a total arse for not helping you when he knows you're pregnant.

  1. Sounds like you have pulled some muscles, very, very much doubt you will have hurt baby as it is all nestled in a big bag of fluid and unlikely to be harmed by what you did. If you are concerned ring MW or triage and have a chat, they are more likely to be able to put your mind at rest.
  1. I wouldn't worry personally, if they are pasteurised then you should be fine.

Concur with the others. But to add you need to have a word with your hr people or boss. Your employer should not be putting you in this position. It's not for you to have to try and deal with unsupportive co workers. The employer should be dealing with it.

  1. You've probably just pulled a muscle or ligament somewhere. The chances of anything bad happening to baby rather than you is quite small really. Having said that, your employer should have done a risk assessment after you told them you were pregnant to stop situations like that happening. I would be inclined to bring it up with your boss when they are back to sort out how this situation can be avoided in future.
  1. The risk from egg is Salmonella. Given that it was pasteurised and from a presumably highly reputable vaccinated hen its unlikely the cookie dough would do anything more than give you a tummy ache from eating too much of it.

Oh I know my co-worker is an arse! Upon finding out I was pregnant he gave me a hug & told me he was so very sorry to hear, he has also asked me on many occasions when I'd be leaving, when I told him I was returning to work after my maternity leave, he went on to lecture me about how inappropriate that would be & back in his day children wouldn't be brought up in such dysfunctional households (he is mid 50's), he made me late to my last midwife appointment because he told me that I wasn't doing my job because I didn't have time to make his visitor a drink, as i was running out the door putting my coat on. He is a whole other story.
On the whole my employer has been fantastic, my boss is extremely accommodating & has gone out of his way to make sure I am okay, but he is out of the office today.

Thank you all though for putting my mind at rest.

I was told by mw anything with pasteurised egg is fine, including mousse, coleslaw, mayonaise etc so out that our of your mind
As for lifting I too have had to do quite abit, plus love getting told not to pick dd up ( 17months) how do you manage that, I think it is more harmfully to you then baby but would agree to speak to work as you shouldn't be in that position, I hooe that guy realises what a co*k he was!

afrikat · 28/02/2013 17:00

I don't have anything constructive to add, just wanted to sympathise with you working with such a tw@t! Also, I now want some cookie dough....

DanniiH · 01/03/2013 15:27

Ooh cookie dough! Mmmmm! Harmless! Even if it did cause illness it would only be to you not the baby. Work incident sounds muscular just rest up a while and kick that guy in the nuts until he helps you next time, what a c*ck! x
