Early weight gain- a slippery slope??

I'm 15+ weeks and I've gained just under a stone and feeling pretty yuk. I'm usually a pretty fit size 14 so curvy but not massive and have had a positive body image.

The combination of easing off on exercise and eating more bread ( and sweets) than I should in the first trimester has taken its toll and my tummy is looking distinctly wobbly and not bump like.

Need some inspiration that I can get back into a healthy mindset, help!

I'm not sure I can help much but I put on 4 stone in both pregnancies. I lost the weight within 6 months of giving both.

Looking back I sometimes wonder at my lack of self control, but I honestly don't think I could have done anything differently. I was so hungry, for carbs and red meat and drank gallons of orange juice and milk. I was very sick in the first few weeks and could only stomach cheese and white bread sandwiches and salt and vinegar crisps, if that.

And so so tired.

So I guess aim for eating well, but don't beat yourself up if it doesn't go to plan.

I found it hard to eat healthily in both pregnancies, especially at the beginning due to nausea. This time I was incredibly sick but was shocked to find I'd still gained weight. I guess it's because I could only cope with carbs. Normally I have a healthy vegetarian diet, loads of fruit and veg. In the first tri especially virtually all fruits and vegetables repulsed me.

Last time I pigged out throughout. I'd say I put on about 4 stone. This time I've not had as much of an appetite so we'll see. You just have to do what you can to get through. If you're struggling to eat healthily then plan to lose the weight after pregnancy if the weight gain is stressing you. Look up some buggy fit classes for example - it can be hard to exercise with a baby in tow. I'm also going to go to Slimming World this time because I didn't lose all my weight last time.

Thanks both it is really helpful to hear your stories. Even though I have friends with children it is not something I've discussed with them and I didn't have any idea how I would feel (and cope) with being pregnant.

I think I need to let go of the idea of achieving a super healthy pregnancy and be happy with doing what I can!

I put on a lot of weight in the first few months - I really think your body needs it. I'm 34 weeks now and a combo of heart burn and a squashed stomach means I find it hard to eat too much in one go and crabs are the worst - so I am eating more fruit and veg. You might find as your pregnancy progresses and your baby puts on weight you eat less.

Congratulations by the way, how rude of me! It will all be worth it in the end x

Listen to your body and baby they know what you need. Weight can be lost, but denying yourself food to stay a certain weight could have severe side effects. I'm 7 weeks and put on 11lbs! I know ill look like a house by the end but ill have my baby which will be so much more important than my extra weight.

Last time I put most of my weight on early and then it just stopped, I only gained a stone in total and am a believer that your body just does what it needs to somehow. I'm not weighing myself this time but will be going on the diet of my life after the baby is born.

I'm now 35w and put on a stone in the first trimester, nothing in the second trimester (though I could see weight redistributing itself) and am just gradually adding pounds in the third trimester. Stomach size and heartburn just killed any appetite. Don't worry is my advice. Congrats and enjoy your pregnancy!
