Smints & Aspartame

Hi ladies,

I'm into my 12th week now and still have that awful taste on my tongue. The only way to relieve it is with Smints and I get through a packet of 40 tabs every two days. I realise they're small but contain aspartame and I'm concerned I could be damaging my baby...but at the same time they're the only thing that seems to work.

Anyone else used them when they were pregnant and am I just being silly or should I lay off them to be on the safe side. Desperate!!!

A lot of sugar free mints have a laxative in them too (not sure about smints though)

Do other similar mints without artificial sugars not do the trick?

VelvetQuilt · 25/02/2013 09:47

The laxative affect doesn't work for me (unfortunately!) Extra strong mints came close but they had a weird after taste and because I ate so many they left a horrid coating on my teeth. I can't win!

What about peppermint tea? Might be worth a go.

The taste will ease soon, and the aspartame is unlikely to do any damage. M&S do sugar free mints that have sucralose instead - better than aspartame

Ooo I'll definitely try the M&S mints-thanks for the tip. This pregnancy has been quite different from my first, I feel quite at sea with this one!

I would personally try and avoid sweetners. There's nothing wrong with a bit of sugar (polos?) at least it's natural whereas sweeteners are chemicals. Polos or trebor mints are sugar........

For the benefit of pregnant and post partum Mums re-"Smints" One lady expressed her concern at finding that Smints contain Aspartame so tried a different brand containing Sucralose instead- Heads Up! They are BOTH ASPARTAME!! It also trades under a number of other labels . Aspartame is deadly -avoid it totally!
