Heavy bleeding and clots at 12 weeks

Hi all. I'm just home from hospital after a night in A&E and the morning in EPU. It was the most distressing and frightening night of my life. I started bleeding around 9pm yesterday, passed two big blood clots and continued bleeding with cramping through the night. I was convinced I was passing my baby and i was in pieces. My DM and DH just about held me together.

Went to EPU this morning and waited 2 hours for scan. By some miracle the baby is still there, still alive. I'm in total shock. We're so happy our baby is still hanging in there but I'm also still terrified, bleeding (less) and cramping. The doctor couldn't explaIn the source of bleeding or the risks to the baby now either. I guess she hasn't got a crystal ball so can't give reassurance when she can't be sure.

Has anyone else been through this and baby has been ok??

I have had three pregnancies with bleeding, one ended in mc. I had the heaviest bleeding in my first pregnancy - huge gushes of blood soaking through a pad every minute. The result of that pregnancy has been talking my ear off all morning and is currently eating a cheese and ham roll! The doctors could neither explain the bleeding nor offer any reassurance but all was well. The one that ended in mc, I experienced labour pains and it was very obvious what the bleeding was. My third pregnancy I had some spotting and bleeding, and the result of that pregnancy has been screaming her head off all morning.

I had a massive bleed at 12 weeks , it was literally like my insides had fallen out , with huge clots like lumps of liver (TMI) . I to was convinced that I'd miscarried but he's now 20 , they said at the time it had been a twin pregnancy and I'd lost one . Good luck with your pregnancy and I hope you have a successful outcome like we did .

I've had bleeding in this pregnancy like you describe at 10 weeks, 12 weeks,16 weeks, 18 weeks and 21 weeks (currently 22 weeks) and everytime the baby has been fine and they have no idea why it happened or keeps happening.

They say everytime 'some people bleed the whole pregnancy' like that's that.

I had a huge bleed at 14 weeks ( one week after scan) and like you thought I had lost our baby. However when we had a scan at epu the baby was fine and still kicking away. I had two weeks off work and slowly continued to bleed ( brown blood as opposed to the bright re blood in does bleed) everything calmed down about 17 weeks and no bleeding since. I'm now 35 weeks and little one is kicking away!

I know it's hard, but try to stay postivie. Good luck x

Your replies mean a lot to me, thank you, I know it wasnt twins as I had my nuchal scan only a few days ago and two early scans before that. I was so relieved to see baby alive but I'm still crampy and bleeding a bit. Though for now it's lighter blood. No clots since last night. I'm exhausted and drained now but trying to stay hopeful x

i bled every month period stylee til 5 months with my 3rd, who is now a healthy, confident and very gobby 3 1/2 year old :) x

I had an absolutely mahoosive bleed at just after 11 weeks. For two days I was soaking through pads every hour. Then I had a couple of weeks of brown blood.

My son is now a happy, healthy 6 month old who is blissfully unaware of all the stress he caused me!

gingerbreadpixie I haven't experienced this but I just wanted to say how sorry I am for you and all the other ladies who go through this kind of thing, I can only imagine how terrifying it is. I hope everything is ok and will say a little prayer for all of you. Xx

Hi Gingerbread I'm currently 16+6 with my first. I've been bleeding constantly for over 5 weeks now. I've had 3 massive bleeds and each time I've been scanned & all was ok. Not a minute has passed in the last 5 weeks that I haven't been wearing a pad. I pass clots every few days too.

The first 2 weeks were the hardest because I thought it was a really slow form of torture & felt that it was just a long drawn out miscarriage.

Now I've accepted that (fingers crossed) this is normal for me. Although the no exercise/no sex/constant mess is frustrating! And when I see clots it's always distressing.

I really hope it works out for you, try not to worry because nothing you can do will change the outcome x

I had a bleed with dc1 at about 25 weeks, he was fine. I had a bleed at 8 weeks with 2nd pregnancy which sadly ended in a mc. I have now had a bleed 2 days ago at 25 weeks again with dc2 but she's wriggling away happily and everything so far has been fine.

Flyingsprocket - that's pretty much how I feel. It's so distressing. I got to the point last night where I refused to go to the toilet because I couldn't face the blood anymore. But of course I had no control over anything so I just had to try to reach a level of acceptance.

Still cramping but its light-moderate. Blood is lighter and more brown/pink that bright red.

I'm in bed now and I'm staying here for a few days. I have a cervical scan booked for weds anyway (have had cone biopsy in the past) so as long as I can get up, I will go to that.

Hi hopingfor. Yes I pop in and out of the T1 thread. :)

I'm ok. Physically things are getting better. I went for another scan of womb and cervix yesterday. Baby was wriggling around as usual! No clues found as to where the bleed came from though. I had some brown discharge yesterday as it was the first day since Monday that I'd gotten out of bed. But I guess that was just old blood getting dislodged.

Emotionally though I'm struggling to get past it. Still checking my pants constantly and thinking I can feel blood. Hopefully that will settle down. I'm due back at work on Monday, just working half days in the afternoon, but I'm scared of bleeding again when I'm out. I guess I'll just see how it goes.

Im glad all seems ok, i had/have bleeding tho no where near as much as you have had (touches wood) did they say anything about a cervical erosion. I was signed off work for a month around 14 weeks to rest up.

No nothing about cervical erosion was mentioned. Just totally unexplained!

I've already had 4 weeks off with anxiety issues followed by this week to rest, so 5 straight weeks off sick. I'm due to go back to work Monday for 4 hours a day for a week but I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing going back. Some say bed rest for threatened miscarriage, some say carry on as normal. I'm confused. If I continue to stay at home I'm not sure it'll be the best thing for me mentally but I don't want to overdo things and risk another bleed. Though from what I understand, if a miscarriage is going to happen you can't stop it. And my bleed happened after a month of doing very little.

Sorry, I'm waffling. I'm just anxious about returning to work after the bleed and not sure it's the right thing to do.

Ive lost count of the times im in n out of triage for spotting and most times no reason can be found tho i do have a cervical erosion i worry every time, nothing showed on scan then? Poor u how often are they going to scan u now? I was the same wasnt advised to bed rest but did anyway well as much as u can wen u have a 4 year old. I was 20 weeks before i went back to work and still worry only u can decide whats best for ur mental health

No nothing on the scan. I did have a small clot on the womb at an early dating scan but it was gone by my next scan at 10 weeks. Perhaps it came back??

All consultant said really was that it could very well have come from the cervix but there was no evidence it had. I'm not having another scan until 18 weeks now but I ve been told any more problems to go straight to the emergency gynae dept.

Midwife said I can go back to work as long as bleeding has completely stopped. I haven't seen any blood since yesterday (and that was just brown) so fingers crossed.

I had a five day bleed with many large clots at 11 weeks. The GP told me I had MCd without any scans.

Four weeks later I had a BFP and went for an early scan at 6 weeks only to find out I was 17 weeks pregnant.

I had heavy bleeding and clotting (no cramps though) right up to 16 weeks. They never got to the bottom of my bleeding either, but did monitor closely. I now have an almost 3 year old.
It's terrifying, you have my thoughts. I hope everything progresses well for you.

It's surprising to me how common this unexplained pregnancy bleeding seems to be. You'd think that amount of blood would have a detectable cause??

I just really hope it was a one off though.

Hi all, I know it's been a while since anyone posted on this but i found this post recently after having heavy bleeding and large clots at 11 weeks plus 4 days. I was convinced i was haing a miscarriage but a scan the next day showed baby was fine, it was such a relief. I was diagnosed with a subchronic haematoma at my 12 week scan. Apparently it is fairly common and just means that my body produced too much blood and it clots and builds up in the area around your baby, I was told that it would not harm baby and that it should sort itself out by my 20 week scan. Well i bled for 4 WEEKS! But a recent scan shows the haematoma has got a lot smaller and my baby is still happy and healthy. One thing i would also like to add is that this bleeding gave me a high hCG reading and low PAPP reading at my combined test giving me a high risk result of 1 in 25, although it was scarey more tests revealed that baby is fine and the result was purely down to the bleeding, those of you experiencing lots of bleeding and get a high risk result from your bloods, dont panic, everything is probably fine.
