Foetal cells seen with maternal bleed

I am just over 18 weeks and have been bleeding on and off since 9 weeks pregnant.

Because of a previous LLETZ procedure to my cervix, this has been considered to be the cause of the bleeds. At first, I was given ultrasound scans to check foetal viability and there was never a cause for bleed seen, hence it was put down to being just my cervix. FOr the last 5 weeks I have just had foetal heartbeat monitored each time the blood was freshly red instead of brown, and each time the heartbeat is fine.

I am rhesus negative so have to have Anti D injections fortnightly. Today, for the first time, they checked my blood to see if I actually need the Anti-D or whether I am still covered from the one given a fortnight ago.

It surprised us all to find there were foetal cells present in my blood, which meant that not only do I DEFINITELY need to have Anti-D, but a double-dose at that!

When I asked, they had no idea why the foetal blood has mixed with mine and said it could be possible the placenta has torn away slightly from time to time. There was no advice as to whether I need to take it easy to prevent this from happening any further, so I can only imagine that it can't be helped one way or the other.

I did a quick google (not always the best idea, I know) and learned that foetal bleeds can mean nothing, or they can result in foetal death.

So I wondered if anyone else has experienced this and has any further insight?

Have you been scanned recently?

Not since 13 weeks... they did a transvaginal scan to establish how long the cervix is. It was 2.8 cm so they were't worried. At this point they thought the bleeding is solely from the cervix, it was only today that they realised it was foetal as well. It's the first time they took my blood to check Kleihhauer Betke results before deciding if I need Anti D.

Have you got a scan coming up?

Am due for the 20 week scan in 10 days time, which I think might be the reason they weren't in a hurry to scan today.
