First trimester food weirdness

Is anyone else having the same experience?

Ooh I fancy some...peanut butter. Comes back from supermarket with peanut butter, two types of bread, scones, crackers and chocolate marshmallows.

Ooh I'll cook this chicken. Oh no, suddenly I hate chicken and it's all going in the bin.

I spend hours because I'm hungry trying to work out what I want but I can change my mind in seconds so I can't plan meals at all. I ended up eating quite late last night as I couldn't decide and then I had heartburn that kept me awake. I think I'll stick to toast and biscuits, it's safer.

Bleeeeugh.

Same here, thought it was getting better then happened again yesterday, where I had to spit pizza out because I couldn't even swallow it changed my mind mid chew!

I also can't touch raw chicken now, makes me wretch.

SeriousStuff · 05/02/2013 11:01

I can empathise with this! I'm just over 5 weeks pg and whilst I'm not having any strong cravings, I do fixate on certain things. Have thought of nothing but cold 'morning after' pizza with salad cream on it since yesterday. Also, have wanted this on crackers since the weekend but don't know if the cheese is safe or not!

My main obsession at the moment is Babybel - can't get enough of them. But at the same time, I do change my mind quite quickly.

The other morning I wanted muesli and yoghurt but as soon as I took the first mouthful, it made me gag! Wanted Miso soup as a snack yesterday so my husband kindly made me one, but as soon as I smelt it, I knew I didn't want it anymore. I also wanted a toasted egg sandwich this morning, but after going to the effort of boiling eggs and making toast, half way through eating it, I didn't want it anymore!

How far gone are you?

BraveLilBear · 05/02/2013 11:22

Welcome to pregnancy Wink

I had all of this and more. Went down to literally just pringles and lucozade for a while. I've found that I've basically spent a fortune on food because I can't mitigate for what I want at any one time!

It does get better, honest. I'm now 16 weeks and eating normally... Well, fairly normally - I'm just eating more substantial stuff with the odd craving now. Eat what you can and don't buy lots of fresh stuff unless you're going to eat it imeediately!

cupcake78 · 05/02/2013 11:29

Yep, it only gets more weird. I'm 20wks and still can only eat what I fancy. Thankfully it's mainly fruit at the moment.

weeblueberry · 05/02/2013 11:39

Yep I was exactly the same at that stage. My DP made me a lovely homemade meal which any other time I'd have loved but nope. Couldn't even touch it. The pickiness has pretty much passed now (am 27 weeks) but I still can't eat that meal he made me that day as the thought makes me feel sick. Sad

suzyrut · 05/02/2013 12:02

I completely sympathise I changed my mind so quickly in early pregnancy that dp and I would go to the little waitrose at the end of my road on the way home from work every evening to choose my dinner xx

KFFOREVER · 05/02/2013 12:46

I too sympathise with you ladies. Felt very guilty for wasting so much food and money. For most this gets better but at 35 weeks im still the same. Take each day as it comes. Good luck.

MisselthwaiteManor · 05/02/2013 17:32

I'm still like this at 18 weeks. It's impossible to do the food shop because I have no idea what I want for dinner today let alone predict a week ahead. I'm just keeping the cupboards full of everything I might fancy.

FoofFighter · 05/02/2013 17:35

ahh yes.

I realllllly wanted a curry last night, had one, enjoyed it. Planned to have curry again but homemade tonight. Cannot face the mere thought of it Envy < thats a vom face.

Am trying to not meal plan as I've no idea from one day to the next what I will want.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 06/02/2013 18:45

I'm 7+4. Just had to go and buy a load of frozen junk for dinner. Not sure if these are real cravings or an excuse to indulge!

EggyM · 06/02/2013 19:13

I'm 15 weeks and just had a cheese and jam and gherkin sandwich for dinner...

gardenpixie32 · 06/02/2013 19:40

This takes me back ladies. I would wonder around the supermarket for ages and end up with a trolley of crap! Nothing to actually cook just junk food and weird combinations. Like Puy lentils and Lindt chocolate Confused. Thankfully I lost weight in first trimester thanks to horrendous morning sickness.

I hope your sickness goes soon.

BelleEtLaBaby · 06/02/2013 19:42

9 weeks here and heavily medicated for HG, although this time weirdly I still have an appetite (unlike first pg where all I could eat for about 8 months were cheap Bernard Mathews turkey drummers and crusty white bread. Literally. ).

I keep wanting something madly for a day or so then not being able to stomach it at all. It was primula cheese spread for a few days. We are living with pils at the moment while we move into our house and she bought 6 tubes of the stuff, and now I can't stomach it. She keeps doing this: there are 4 packs of frozen chocolate crepes in the freezer. And literally hundreds of packs of mini cheddars (I didn't even get through all of my first bag. ). She won't listen :)

AmandaCooper · 06/02/2013 19:50

Ha ha I know just what you mean our freezer has ended up full of food that was the only thing I could stomach until suddenly oh no it's not I can't eat it! Now that I'm over the worst of the picky stage DH is making me eat it all!

bingeddybongo · 06/02/2013 21:17

Oh I am so pleased to hear this isn't just me! I usually plan meals a week in advance because I love cooking so much but right now I have lost all interest in food - apart from either to try and get rid of the extreme nausea or because I've gone from stomach-feels-tight-as-a-walnut to so-hungry-I-could-chew-off-my-own-arm in less than 30 seconds. I hate not enjoying my food or even knowing what I want to eat... I NEVER don't know what I want to eat! I'm only 6+4 and it's driving me mad!! :(

EwokStorageUnit · 07/02/2013 12:07

It's a nightmare! However the worst craving I had was for Cinnabons... haven't had them in years, but just suddenly had a mad desire for them and there's only four/five shops in the country!

Found out OH was going to be in Cambridge (a good couple of hundred mile round trip) on business. I nagged him so much for two days that he actually went looking for the shop whilst he was there. I got my Cinnabons, but could only manage one and didn't want anymore... I am not particularly popular over that little nagfest!

Impossible to plan. I'd like to say that it's getting better, but....

SeriousStuff · 07/02/2013 12:19

Did a big weekly shop this morning, bought so many nice things but today, all I really want it white buttered toast. Husband is looking forward to spicy North African merguez sausages tonight...I usually can't get enough of them but can't imagine eating them right now!

Really trying to force myself to eat a varied diet, at least whilst I don't have any nausea, but it's so hard when my taste buds suddenly just want plain food!

sheeplikessleep · 07/02/2013 12:22

Same here! 10 weeks and I'm constantly thinking about food, but nothing quite hits the mark (apart from McCain oven chips).

Thumbwitch · 07/02/2013 12:30

My worst part of first trimester food madness was going off chocolate. I'm normally an utter chocolate monster, so for me to go off it is a Big Deal. No cravings, no other weirdness - just couldn't eat chocolate with any level of enjoyment.

The "problem" went away at 15w. Grin

AmandaCooper · 07/02/2013 13:28

That cinnabons story made me laugh! Thanks for that, Ewok!

leeloo1 · 08/02/2013 16:17

Ugh, me too! I'm 9+1 and really hate the thought of food - except when I'm starving and have to eat right now... except have no idea what I want. :(

On the whole eating seems to help the nausea though, but its just finding things I can bear to cook and eat (wtf did I try to be healthy and buy salmon? Oh well DS & DH ate it).

Its reassuring to hear its not just me though - I never had anything like this with DS, so its a bit of a shock.

rainand · 08/02/2013 16:31

I went off so many foods, couldn't go anywhere near or even think about my fav dish at wagawama!

FoofFighter · 08/02/2013 17:27

I've gone off food again today, am eating but the thought of having somethign for tea is making me feel very green right now(and we are supposed to be eating out too!)

Msbluesky32 · 08/02/2013 17:44

Yes, definitely. Try picking a restaurant - it's totally impossible. DP often suggests we eat out because i cant decide what to eat but can I decide - ever. Our food shop has just become like lottery - ill pick things in the vague hope that I might fancy it but there is no way of knowing.

tiggerishtom · 09/02/2013 10:28

I am 12 weeks (scan is on Monday), and I have faced all these problems.

My diet, since I have been pregnant, has been worse than it normally is. Five a day is normally easily achieved for me , but these days its seem to junk food and takeaways are the only think I can stomach!

Thank god for pregnancy vitamin supplements!

Off out to a really nice resturant tonight (booked before we knew I was pregnant) and I am dredding it!
