14 weeks. and bleeding?!?

Hey all,

Just looking for some reassurance really. Am 14 weeks 3 days and woke up this morning to find I had been bleeding through the night. Went to the toilet and bled some more. Its red. No pain as such though I have some backache. Anyone have any ideas? X

You need to go to pregnancy assessment unit. Just call them and let them know you're coming. I had bright red bleeding at something like 28 weeks, it was just a cervical erosion, but it needs to be checked.

A lot of EPU's aren't open at the weekend and won't accept direct referrals. Stick a pad on, take it easy and call them, but you may need to wait and speak to MW or GP tomorrow. You should have numbers of who to call on your notes.

I had this last week (just coming off the bed-rest). It may not be the best idea to go to EPU as (the midwife told me) you're no longer considered 'Early'. I went to A and E and they'll try and get you into a maternity triage clinic. I had my bleed at 6.30am on Tuesday and was in A and E for about 7.30ish (waited a bit to see if it would stop, but it didn't!). They got me into a maternity clinic where they confirmed the HB and that my cervix was still closed, THANK GOD! (so not miscarrying there and then). Unless you are actually miscarrying there is little they can do apart from send you home for bed-rest. I was a bit shocked to be told that I can't go to EPU anymore... These maternity clinics are only open during the week, so I'm not sure what they'll do when you get to A and E. I am lucky that my local hospital is Addenbrookes (in Cambridge) which is huge.

My bleed was a torn/abrupted placenta (they think). I just have to be careful from now on - although - all I did at the time was just to stand up!

I hope everything works out ok for you! I freaked when it happened to me! I have no idea how you're appearing so calm.

Yes, you are too late for EPU, but our local pregnancy assessment unit was open weekends and would take direct referrals. It depends where you are, but you need to seek treatment today. They can't do much if it's cervical erosion or a m/c, but if you have an infection you can start treatment.

Definitely try and see someone today, my mw was very clear (im also 14 weeks) that if I had a bit of brown blood to call if I wanted reassurance but any red blood to call the triage at the hospital immediately. The number is on the front page of my notes.

Try not to panic though- I read somewhere that nearly 80% of "threatened miscarriages " (I.e.bleeding) go on to become healthy babies. Best of luck. Xx

Hi stacey I'm 14+5 & have been bleeding for 3 weeks now. It started the weekend too. I called the out of hours GP to told me to go to A&E. there was nothing they could do there buy left a referral for the EPAU who called me at 8am on Monday. I was scanned & everything was ok. I was then admitted the following Wednesday for observation as I passed some clots with the blood. They were happy all is ok & I was advised to avoid exercise.

That was 3 weeks ago & I have been bleeding constantly since. I've passed a few more clots (one the size of a golf ball yesterday) I went to the EPAU again on Friday because Thurs evening whilst sitting down i felt a sudden gush of bright red blood that didn't stop all night.

I was scanned & examined and they can find absolutely to reason for the bleeding. I'm so relieved that the little one is ok but the bleeding is uncomfortable & the clots distress me. They told me at this stage, if I were to miscarry, I would have a lot of abdominal pain with the bleeding. Like you I've only had a few back aches.

If you're concerned go to A&E or at least et a referral to the early pregnancy unit in the morning. My EPAU deals with women up to 18 weeks.

Thanks everyone for your messages. Ended up at Maternity triage where they gave me an internal exam and everything appeared to be ok. Cervix etc is closed. Have to go back through the week for a scan so fingers crossed. Just got such a fright when I woke up.

On bed rest so cosied in for the night! Think its because your so programmed to think the worst when you see blood. Taking no chances. So have everyone else running around (: x

Phew Stacy. Thank goodness things are OK. Hope you heal quickly and enjoy your bed rest. I went stir crazy after 1 day. My ms also got realllllllllllly bad as well as I had nothing really to distract me.
