Pregnancy & going abroad. Thoughts please?

Are their restrictions? Dp & I would like to conceive before our holiday in August. I personally wouldn't want to be too early or in late stages, maybe after the 20week scan?

What would I need to look out for or be weary of?

I went sailing on a yacht in th Caribbean when I was 19/20 weeks pregnant. Had a fab time and was lovely to have a last relaxed holiday before our sons was born. I missed the cocktails though! We bought the special run back though and in the summer I have been promised to be made some at home!
Check your travel insurance very carefully and the what if questions. We knew if there was an issue I would need to be helicoptered off and taken to America for treatment so went in great detail with them that this scenario would be covered and got it in writing and checked if we got stuck there and the baby was born the baby would be covered too.

I went away (somewhere hot and sunny) when I was 10 weeks and then for a 4wk trip when I was 18-22 wks. No issues. There are restrictions regarding how late you can fly in pregnancy (according to airlines - see their websites for rules) and my travel insurance only covered me for foreign travel up until about 24 wks, I think (although I'm sure you can get other policies that allow you to travel later).

It might be an idea to avoid your first trimester, only because if you have bad sickness, or are really knackered, then a holiday might not be all that fun.

I went abroad during both pregnancies haven't been able to afford it since we had the second DC and it was fine. We were only in Europe though. First time I was about 16 weeks, second time I was 27 weeks ish, only a few days before the cut off when I would have needed a fit to fly letter. I checked the insurance was ok - I got cover with M and S the second time.

I second avoiding going in the early weeks when you may be more paranoid and/or sickly.

I went to California when I was five months pregnant it was a long flight but we got a night flight so I was able to sleep for most of it. On the way home we broke up the fight by stopping over in New York for a few nights...I was really tired by this time. My insurance covered me if I needed hospital treatment and I spoke to my GP beforehand.

Depending on the airline you would need a doctors note to fly after about 28-30 weeks. But if you have had a healthy pregnancy then even then it is not an issue.

Why wouldn't you want to be in the early stages? Because of feeling sick? That would be my only thought in the early stages.

We were on holiday in Australia when we found out I was pregnant, i was 6 weeks by then and we still had a week of holiday left. We had been diving and all sorts up to then and I was fine. In that last week there were days when I felt really rotten and didn't enjoy it as much but I never once worried about the baby

We live abroad so I also intend to travel a fair bit before I have the baby in August, including a trip back to UK in July and some sort of sun holiday in May.

Depending on when in Augut your holiday is i would wait a month or so before TTC. But in all honesty I wouldn't be thinking twice about it, you don't know how long it will take and can't not plan your life just in case

First of all, we delayed trying for a baby as we were travelling to South America for a month, then it took over a year to conceive only to suffer a miscarriage. And we went abroad to Romania when I was 11 weeks pregnant when I suffered a missed miscarriage, it was awful. Then I had a second miscarriage last year on holiday in England. Now decided to sod it and just book next holidays without trying to plan around pregnancies that may or may not last. I'm now 5 weeks pregnant, going skiing next month in France and to California in April for a month. If it happens there's not a lot you can do, just make sure you have insurance. Got to live your life. We do have a DD 19 months ;-)

I went hols for 2 weeks and was 31 weeks!!! Got letter from Gp saying I was fit to fly!! Checked with insurance and airline and all was well!
I avoided drinking loads as the loo was a tight squeeze and also walking up and down the aisles!!! On arrival my ankles was swollen and it hurt to walk around in the heat!!!!
A must comfortable shoes ,bottoms and top!
Flight socks and even extra foot space!!!
And your hospital notes!!!!!!

I had about three holidays when pregnant with #1 (one long haul) - no problems.

I've travelled quite a bit so far (I'm only 14 weeks) I agree with bejeena you can't plan your life around possible conception. It took us 9 months to conceive & in that time we planned & went on 2 long haul holidays, I ran a half marathon, rode an endurance bike event (although I thought I'd be pregnant so didn't put in enough training!) and booked a ski holiday.

Turned out I couldn't ski but enjoyed the holiday nonetheless. You gotta live your life....!

I trekked all around New York at 14 weeks. I was a bit tired but otherwise fine. I second what others have said about getting good insurance and get your insurance as soon as you book the holiday so if you experience any problems before you are due to go, your insurance will reimburse the cost of your trip if you find you are unable to go.

Went to Iceland for a walking holiday when I was 8/9 weeks, and I slept more than I walked! Wasn't ideal. We had insurance that covered anything happening while away, or if we had to cancel the holiday owing to anything here, but the policy didn't consider 'normal pregnancy' to be reason enough to cancel. So do check the terms closely and make sure you have insurance in place as soon as you book something, just in case. The trouble is, you have no idea until you're pregnant how you will feel, or what lovely symptoms you will develop, and that can change daily tbh! Personally I wouldn't plan anything too strenuous just in case, but a relaxing beach type holiday might be just the thing!

Make sure your insurance covers you if you need to cancel due to pregnancy. Had to cancel our holiday, was 12weeks at the time and had hyperemesis. Luckily my discharge notes from hospital satisfied insurers and we got every penny back. We booked before I knew I was pregnant .. I had no idea that being pregnant can make some people very unwell. Definitely book as the chances are you will be fine... Check your insurance though.

I've travelled overseas during both pregnancies, first one to China (not planned!) and second to Spain. What I would say is that morning sickness is horrible even at home in your own house, but being overseas or in any unfamiliar place it can be 10 times worse.
