Daughter's friend from nursery has chickenpox. I'm 35 wks pregnant & have never had chickenpox

Any suggestions? The child with spots has been removed from the nursery but should I keep my daughter away until its clear no one else has it or is that overly cautious & she's prob ok? She's 20 months if it matters

This happend to me when I was about 16 weeks Dd actually had chicken pox! I thought I had never had chicken pox. I was given a blood test to test my immunity and luckily was immune. We ended up in the out of hours clinic to confirm dd did have chicken pox and was told to phone the gp for the bloods.

I would ring your gp's saying you are pregnant and have been in contact with the pox. They will probably fit you in for a blood test. Chicken Pox is more contaigous before the spots appear anyway so there is a chance your dd could already have caught them. Hope that helps.

i've never had chicken pox either, so one of my major concerns as being tested for immunity because i didn't dare leave the house or talk to people.

They are testing my blood for immunity right now but have said that its irrelevant as there's nothing they can do if I catch it anyway....which makes me wonder whether its worth stressing about?

I don't know what the practice is nowadays but I had the chickenpox, aged 3 when my Mum was pregnant with my brother. She was fine.

Would it be better to get your DD to have them at a younger age so that she is immune for future perhaps? This used to be common practice

I had this problem before Xmas. DD had the pox, after blood test showed I had no immunity I was given a vaccine. Better to be in control,

no, you're right, they can't do anything if you catch it, but it's nice to know iyswim. :)

I had to go up for blood tests at xmas when I was about 13wks, as my BIL came down with Shingles, and I've never had chickenpox. I assumed I was immune, however, as it turns out I'm not! At the age of 33, having never caught chickenpox, surely I have some kind of resistance to it at least?

I think there is a vaccine you can get which I might consider before getting pregnant again

The most contagious stage for chickenpox I'd the 14 days before the spots break out, so obviously nobody is any the wiser, so chances have it that your dd will have already been exposed to it, so there's no reason not to send her to nursery, so maybe just get yourself a blood test done and fingers crossed you will be immune xx

I have been in a similar situation. 35 weeks pregnant and 2.5 year old been in contact with children at nursery with chicken pox. It has been going on for a few months and so far she hasn't caught it. I had it as a child and have had my blood checked and I'm immune. But my biggest fear was my DD catching it when the new baby is tiny as can be v dangerous. So I have just got her vaccinated. Figured if I can prevent my daughter suffering from it and try and protect the baby at the same its got to be worth it. She has two vaccinations 6 weeks apart and is 70-80% immune after the first jab. That could be another option for you?
