What makes a baby turn breech? Having a section next week; a little shocked.

Every appointment I went to midwives commented along the lines of "baby is in a great position" etc. I went for an appointment with my community midwife in Thursday and she was concerned that my bump was too small for 37 weeks but position was normal.

Went to hospital today and baby has turned breech, is this due to something in particular or just one of those things?

I am now booked in for a section next week, which had never entered my mind before.

I went to the hospital very unconcerned this morning as it was the second time I had been sent there about the size of my baby and everything was fine before.

Also the doctor said the baby is going to be very small, only 5.5lbs at the minute.

I want a healthy baby so will do what is best but have to say my eyes filled up a little in the consultants room. Sad

I'm not overly worried about having a section it's just that I haven't thought of it til now.

I don't have experience of this, but I didn't want to read and run.

I believe that a baby turning into the breech position (or refusing to move out of it) is just luck of the draw, and in your case, bad luck of the draw!

The fact that the baby seems to be small could be just one of those things - and from what I have ready they often get it wrong by a pound or two anyway! But if he / she is a bit on the small side, a c-section is probably for the best anyway, as he / she will be saved the hard work of labour!

I'd spend the next week relaxing, reading up about c-sections so that you know what to expect and getting ready to meet your baby! Good luck - I'm sure everything will be a-ok!

Hi

My last two turned sideways at 40 weeks. One righted at 41 weeks and one needed c section. Both fine. As soon as they turned sidebars though has regular checks and eventually admitted week before each birth because of risks of non head down birth if labour stats spontaneously and help not fast at hand (and I give birth fast!!)

Is the breech the only reason for c section? If so would they consider a controlled turn? And/or admitting you and letting you wait a little longer but in safe place to see if baby turns back-they can you know.

They can get weight wrong too. But babies gain about half pound a week at this stage so if 5.5 now looking like 6 at c section. Not bad weight.

Sorry about rubbish spelling in previous. Feeding baby and working too...

Also ask your midwife about positions to encourage baby into head down position. I spent long time with bum in air and it worked!

Babies are breech until late in pregnancy when they flip upside down as birth approaches. They can of course flip and flip again (awkward little so-and-sos) but this gets less likely as the space they have gets tighter for them to turn.

I think they usually turn from 37 weeks gets ration onwards.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about breech babies (never had it with mine)
On the issue of babies weight, try not to worry. A good friend was told her baby would be 4lb max at birth, and was shown special care etc, and was terrified. Her baby was born naturally 10 days later and she was a healthy 7lb 6oz!
They never seem to be hugely accurate!

Good luck
