Suspected ectopic/heterotopic pregancy - worst week of my life

Hi,

I'm 29 and about 5/6 week pregnant with #1. I am a slim PCOS. No morning sickness yet (mum didn't have it) just bloating and occassional pains either side of uterus (no bleeding).

Was trying not to worry, but on Monday I had to take a few sharp intakes of breath occassionally with the twinges and called NHS Direct who told me to go to A&E.

I had tests and found out my hcg was 1900 so had a scan and nothing could be seen in the uterus on the trans-vaginal scan. Cyst on right ovary looked like where the egg popped out (normal), but there was also cyst in left fallopian tube near ovary. I was told to prepare for the worst. Went home and cried my eyes out.

Had blood test after 48 hours - doubled to 4075. Had another scan and a yolk sac has been found in the uterus (thank god!), but have to wait until next Friday for another scan as they are not sure if it is a heterotopic pregnancy (one in womb, one outside). I've googled and apparently it is very rare for natural conceptions - 1 in 20-30,000. Still cacking myself though.

This week has been really bad. Was really looking forward to telling my parents they would be grandparents after the 12 week scan, but I caved and told them after the first (bad) scan. I'm so tired and scared. Sorry for the long post. I just had to get it off my chest. Has anyone else had a suspected ectopic/ heterotopic they would like to share?

Im sure everything will be fine - they are probably just being cautious and things are very hard t see on scans so early. Keep an eye out for serious pain, but try and relax. Dificult I know but if they were really worried they wouldnt have let you go home.

Hi i have had to join mn just to reply to you today although i always read the chat to see what is going on.
I had a heterotopic pregnancy nearly 3 years ago although mine was an ivf one but it is still rare (one in 3000 chance for ivf).
Anyway do not fear i had my embryo that was in my tube (heart still beating so we were devastated) removed at 7.5weeks and the other twin is still with us and currently a naughty little toddler!! So all went well and so if you do have a heterotopic do not fear it doesnt mean the end of your pregnancy just means one baby instead of two.
The surgeon who dealt with me did say how rare it was but did say how well these things can be managed.
If you want to message me i will give you the name of the surgeon who did the op if it helps.

My last pregnancy was a suspected ectopic but it turned out to just be a small cyst and that I wasn't as pregnant as my dates suggested I should be. All turned out to be fine but it was very worrying for the 4 weeks I had to wait for the next scan to confirm.

Aw, this is terrible. Especially with your first!

I was 17 when I found out i was expecting my first. Lost him at 23weeks in April. They thought I was having an ectopic but turned out to be a cyst and retained products. Since then ive had two 7 week miscarriages and 3 D&C's.

The only way i got through it was to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best. Whilst getting support from family- hope this advice helps you! X

Hope - thanks for letting me know your heterotopic story. I admit to having been a bit of a lurker on MN in the past myself! I'll wait until my scan in a few days and see. I've been told if it is the case, there is a good chance of saving the baby in the uterus. Fingers crossed. x

Just an update - they have found a heartbeat in the pregnancy in the uterus and the cyst that they weren't sure about in the tube is just that and it is shrinking! So happy. Thank you for your advice and keeping me sane. x
