Worried....pregnancy test confusion

Hi

I've had 2 positive results each from first response and clear blue digital, but don't understand why both Boots and Tescos own brand are negative looking (though Tescos VERY faint) and the first response was quite strong both times.

I took the boots ones and the tesco one after work but then I did the same with the other two, so don't understand.
Am I pregnant or not? (I have slightly irregular cycles - varying by at most 6 days).

Yes! Any positive means you are! You can get false negatives but not positives. Congratulations!!!

HazleNutt · 17/01/2013 20:04

a line is a line, yes you're pregnant. Tests have different sensitivity, I'm sure the tesco and boots ones will be positive in a few days as well.

amazingmumof6 · 17/01/2013 20:13

Tests vary and can be faulty, but you have enough positives to think you are pg and so congratulations might be in order!

do one tomorrow morning, first pee is more concentrated so the hCG hormone level is higher than later in the day (hence faint tesco one!) this gives the best result!

if positive (I'm quite sure it will be) see gp, mention irregular cycles and ask if you can have an early pregnancy scan (vaginal probe, doesn't hurt) to determine if you are and how far ahead.

if this is not available, I'm fairly sure you can ask for a blood test, they detect pregnancies earlier than urine tests, so it would definitely confirm it either way

amazingmumof6 · 17/01/2013 20:14

simba actually it is a little known fact that you can have false positives - I did!

Whitetara · 17/01/2013 20:36

Thanks everyone, those are encouraging replies, but amazingmum...how many false positives did you get? This is what I'm worried about...

I had my first positive test a week ago today (last Thursday evening) and thought that SURELY there would be enough hCG in my system by now to test positive on any test at any time of day.

I'm on day 30 of my cycle (also day of inconclusive tesco test) and I first tested positive on day 23 using the clear blue, and then with first response on day 25 and day 27 (with a negative from boots also on day 27). Of course I don't know how early I tested though...my cycles are from 25 - 31 days long....What's confusing me is that I think because I tested positive that long ago I should test positive on any test, but now don't know what to believe Confused

I can see a pregnancy test obsession emerging.....Hmm. I can't remember ever testing this much with my other two.

amazingmumof6 · 17/01/2013 20:48

it only happened once! I was 3 days late, took one test, it was + so didn't occur to me to confirm it by double or triple testing!

then 4 days later I started bleeding, panicked I'm having a MC, went to A&E where they looked "inside" and confirmed I was never pregnant as there was no change in the cervix.

I was shocked and said that I did have a + test , but they insisted it had to be false as there was no signs of pregnancy whatsoever internally.

(I think there was a blood test as well, though I don't think I ever got the result back....)

I did another test when I got home, it was negative - had I been pregnant it should have been +!

BUT there's no way you'd have several positive tests from testing at different times on different days with different tests, no way!!!!!!!!

do not worry about false positives, worry about morning sickness instead! Grin Grin

amazingmumof6 · 17/01/2013 20:50

take one tomorrow morning if that makes you feel better

then leave it for 3 days, no obsessing (I'll be watching you!!) then take another one

amazingmumof6 · 17/01/2013 20:52

"BUT there's no way you'd have several positive tests from testing at different times on different days with different tests, no way!!!!!!!! " - I meant to say there's no way that they would all be false!

Whitetara · 17/01/2013 21:55

That must have been quite traumatic thing to happen at the time.

I have one test left over and think I will test first thing tomorrow with it and see what happens. And I'll try not to get obsessive about it....Wink

whitetara so did you POAS? care to share?

(and yes it was horrible, but not as bad as actually having a MC 2 years later...)

Whitetara · 18/01/2013 19:00

I'm so sorry to hear that amazingmum.

Yes, actually twice Blush. Thank you for asking! This morning with tesco. Load of rubbish;nothing. Looked negative. Tonight after work; Clear Blue digital. Pregnant 1-2. I can't believe how anxious I am about this this time around. Hormones? I think I need to step away from the tests now....

amazingmumof6 · 18/01/2013 19:06

forget about the tesco crap.

leave it for now, then do a clear blue one on Monday morning.
and eat loads of food this weekend - after all you are already eating for too!Smile

I'm sure you are with child (love that phrase!)

Is it weird that I really want to know too!

amazingmumof6 · 18/01/2013 19:13

I was so anxious to find out with DD (6th child!) that I almost ruined the holiday obsessing about it and spending money on test after test.

after the first faint line appeared I was desperate to retest, so we stopped to buy another test, but nowhere to pee!

when we arrived at the zoo car park, everyone got out and I sneaked back in and peed into my little one's rinsed out sippy cup - if that's not dedication obsession, nothing is!Grin

cookielove · 18/01/2013 19:17

Little hijack, i am testing with tesco's all have been BFN, but i am almost a week late now, should i test with a different brand i am quite poor i really don't want to fork out for the more expensive brand if i am going to get another Negative, what do you lot think?

cookielove · 18/01/2013 19:40

Why do i have to be a thread killer Hmm

amazingmumof6 · 18/01/2013 19:49

cookie - save your money for baby clothes if pg or a nice drink if you want to drown your sorrows if not pg

just wait for another week or two, if still no period you probably are pg, so go to gp and tell her/him, that you are not sure what's going on, can they give you a test (for free!)

cookielove · 18/01/2013 20:00

Thanks amazing Smile will try and do that if i manage to wait that long!!

Thewhingingdefective · 18/01/2013 20:02

The tests that came back negative just haven't been sensitive enough to detect the hCG. The positives on the FR and CB at real :) Congrats!

Whitetara · 18/01/2013 20:03

Amazing mum, you do realise that if I do another test on Monday that'll be 10 tests in total with 5 positives and "4 undecideds"! Funnily enough I've been using one of the kids plastic ikea cups for the very same. They seem perfect for the job!

Cookie, in my experience the tescos and boots ones have not really been all that clear - as you will have gathered. Clear blue and First response were. Agree with amazingmum about going to the doctors for free (or do pharmacists do them as well? I'm sure I've seen some advertise. Not sure if there is a charge to that though).

Thewhingingdefective · 18/01/2013 20:03

Cookie love, just hold fire and test again in three days if no AF.

Whitetara · 18/01/2013 20:04

no hang on that maths can't be right: 3 cb, 2 fr = positive, 2 tesco 2 boots = 9

OP posts:
Girraferama · 18/01/2013 20:05

Cookielove get some cheap ones on amazon -15 for about £2.50 - they are as sensitive as first response and they work (and you can keep testing guilt-free!

cookielove · 18/01/2013 20:06

Will def get the amazon ones Smile

Whitetara · 19/01/2013 15:19

Having a horrible day. Have started bleeding, some light & some proper blood. No tummy cramps (yet).

Phoned NHS 24 and the doctor called back. He said to see how things pan out over the next week and if the bleeding continues. Do a pregnancy test in one week's time: if negative I've miscarried and if positive to get back in touch. He said at my age (39) I'm not as fertile as when 19 (obviously) and he didn't reckon the pregnancy would be likely to continue.....

I'm so sorry, the same things happening to me. I've been getting positive tests for the past 10 days but all quite faint and not getting darker over time ( which was why I kept testing) I started bleeding yesterday afternoon, phoned NHS 24 and they sent me to the out of hours at the hospital this morning, got to go to EPU on Monday morning for a scan. Still bleeding (but not heavily) but started to get cramps. Fingers crossed for you.
