I'm 21 weeks, we have nearly everything we need now, bar a mattress and a few other little things. Then again, DS1 threatened to come early a few times and a close friend gave birth at 26 weeks, so i'm a little paranoid!

Flisspaps · 16/01/2013 09:50

Buy as soon as you want.

I am firmly of the opinion that it's never too soon - there are others who disagree - but I was of the mind that if anything did happen, then the least of my worries would be any baby items I had already purchased.

this is my first so i dont know wether ill jynx things! that sounds strange because everything looked great on my scan yesterday. couldnt believe how much they checked for... surely i should be a little bit less worried by now!

I'm 21 weeks and I bought quite a lot of clothes in the sale and have looked at other things too. If I see a good bargain on something I'd buy it from now.

MolotovCocktail · 16/01/2013 09:56

Yeah, it's fine to buy things for your baby girl now! You're in the 'bloom' stage of the 2nd trimester: the sickness/nausea/fatigue of trimester 1 should have passed; you're probably not too big at the moment (certainly not as big as you'll be in 10-12 weeks time!!) what I'm saying is that you're in good shape to go shopping.

Enjoy the excitement - it's a magical time Grin

joanna1990marie · 16/01/2013 10:01

yay, i like shopping, not quite sure im blooming, still exhausted but im just one of them people who doesnt suit pregnancy! well, someone said go earlier on so in that v short time ive managed to purchase a very comfy looking nursing chair and a cot bed! this cannot be good!

I didn't buy a single thing until my 20 week scan but started to pick things up from there - the day we got the all clear we got a couple of gorgeous vests and a blanket.

We did wait until a bit later to buy bigger things, though. That wasn't really out of superstition, but because I thought there was no point having nursery furniture, a pushchair, bedding etc gathering dust months and months in advance. Ordered a lot of that stuff over the Christmas break, so I was about 27 weeks or so.

weeblueberry · 16/01/2013 12:04

We got our nursery furniture in the Mothercare sale and bought the travel system from an independent pram centre in Edinburgh who were also having a sale. We're 24 weeks now and were about 21 at the time? Maybe 22? Was Boxing Day...

That's all we've got though so far. We've been given some wee bits and pieces but if I was out and saw something lovely I'd buy it. I'd always been wary, not because of jinxing it but because of the thought of having to come home to a house full of baby things should the worst happen. Then someone on another thread said 'having baby things in your house isn't going to make you feel worse if something happens because you'll already be at your lowest'. It grim, I know. But it also makes perfect sense.

If you see something, buy it. We're having the furniture delivered mid April and the buggy is coming early April so I can figure out how to use it all first. Wink But if I were out and about and saw baby clothes I liked or a sling at a great price I'd absolutely buy it.

You can also pick up bargains at things like NCT nearly new sales etc, however the ones round here only happen every 6 months, so we ended up buying things like baby bath, sterliser etc. at 24 weeks, because that's when the sale was taking place.

Dogsmom · 16/01/2013 17:06

I bought the first outfit at 5 weeks pregnant, lol, it was just too tempting, I then waited until our gender scan at 16 weeks and had the lot within about 6 weeks, nursery all done etc.

There's no way you can make anything medical go wrong by buying things for her.

I don't think there is ever a 'right' time, sadly tragedy can occur right up to the end or after they're born and if we wait until all danger has passed then we'd never buy a thing, all we can do is base our decisions on the odds and they are hugely stacked in your favour Smile

I'm nearly 33 weeks pg and there's no way I'd enjoy walking around the shops for any length of time now nor be up for scrawling around painting/decorating/assembling nursery furniture, it'd be a chore but I really enjoyed it earlier on.

With DS1 I started buying things after the 12week scan, then had a mmc with second pregnancy so when I was pregnant with DS2 I was too paranoid to buy anything at all untill I was about thirty something weeks and bought most at about 35/36 weeks when I was on mat leave, DS2 arrived at 38wks so good job I didn't leave it any longer!!
Now I am 14wks with DC3 and have not bought anything yet but I don't actually need anything!! I will wait untill I find out the sex at my 20wk scan, if its a girl then I will buy a few pink bits but if its another boy then I wont need to buy anything for baby! I will get the other bits like nappies, breast pads, maternity pads etc closer to my due date.

I think it's a personal choice as to when you start buying things but I think most people start after the 12 wk scan and buy pink/blue bits after 20wk scan if they find out the sex (we did with DS1 but didn't with DS2).

I'm 21+6 and we have been given a lot of things but that still didn't stop me shopping just before my scan- I had to take advantage of the sales and offers x

LittleDonkin · 16/01/2013 19:06

I bought my pram when I was 15 weeks with my DD. I am currently 6+5 with my 2nd and I have already bought my Jane powertwin, car seat and car seat base as they were a complete and utter bargain on eBay and like others have said if the worst was to happen I would keep it stored at my mums or sell it on.
