I went for an early scan even though I hadn't had a MC. I had quite bad anxiety in the early weeks of my pregnancy though and literally wasn't sleeping for worrying (this is my first). Frankly it was the best £100 we spent. We went at 7 and a half weeks because, had there not been a heartbeat at that stage it was quite clear it wasn't going to be viable. I exactly knew my dates so had it come back as underdeveloped for that stage I knew it wasn't good news either.

Luckily though we heard her heartbeat and that made me feel MUCH better. We then had an NHS scan at 13 weeks and all was fine, and then a private gender scan at 17.5 weeks where we found out the sex (which was confirmed at the NHS scan at 20 weeks).

We're also getting a private 4D scan for my birthday which, after seeing my friends scan DVD, I'm really looking forward to. Smile

I have had an early scan at 7 weeks at the EPU which served to put my mind at ease for about a day if I am honest! A lot can happen still at that stage I think.
I also paid for a private one 2 days ago (now almost 10 weeks) and yes that one has really reassured me, growth was evident, limbs wiggling etc.

I'd say to leave it to at least 9 weeks if you possibly can wait that long. At 7 weeks you will see a heartbeat yes but that'll be about it really, I think seeing the foetus looking almost like a proper baby (pic on my profile) is more reasuring.

Good luck x

Just to chime in and say I paid for private scan at what turned out to be 8w 3 days -more of a little bean than a baby but worth every penny. he did a little wriggle for us.
I would try and hold out till 8-9 weeks because it's only at 6-7 that a heartbeat is detectable so if you're dates are a bit out you might be a bit panicked if it's not there, even though all could be well. Also if you see hb at 8 weeks apparently (other things being equal) your chances of mc are very low.
I now have my (nhs) 12 week scan next week - as I've had the 8 weeks the wait for this is a lot less scary.
