I got a BFP! How soon did you tell?!

My period is roughly 8 days overdue, I've been getting early pregnancy symptoms for the last 2 weeks, and this morning I got a BFP. I'm so excited and DH will be over the moon (when he wakes up!) This will be dc2 and with dc1 I was so ill with morning sickness that everyone knew by 6 weeks.

I feel like telling our families asap but I know that generally its not the done thing (I've never quite understood why) so I was just wondering when you told your family and close friends?

I told far too many a fair few people - we told close family within 24 hours with the clause of Its early days, keep it to yourselves!. I told close colleagues soon because I had bad morning sickness and wanted some support. One colleague knew we'd been TTC and guessed I was pregnant because I was happier! I basically chose to tell people who I knew would be confidential and who would support me if I was in the unfortunate position of losing the baby before 12 weeks.

Told immediate family about a week later. Asked them not to tell others until 12 weeks, DM respected our wishes, FIL told anyon who'd listen. BIL then tweeted about it.

Told close friends when i saw them.

We have (touch wood) not had any previous probs, so felt we would. Might approach it differently if we had of experienced issues before.

Congratulations! We told close family straightaway. I figured if anything went wrong I'd want my mum's support anyway. A lot of colleagues guesses pretty quickly as I had terrible morning sickness but I asked them to keep it hush hush until I was 12 weeks.
Told everyone else after my scan.

We kept the secret to ourselves for a couple of weeks because I had some spotting so waited until early scans. Told close family at about 6 wks and close friends at 8 wks - we knew we would need the support if anything did go wrong.
Waited until 12 weeks to tell others.

Told my sisters and parents that same day. And everyone else at 13 weeks.

We found out on Christmas day. We haven't told anyone yet. We will tell people after the first scan.

If I worked full time I would have had to tell people as I am feeling so sick this time.

We found out on Wednesday and so far only my manager at work knows because I have to lift heavy boxes sometimes. It's my OHs first child so he wants to tell the world but we've decided to tell his parents soon and I'm going to tell my nan tomorrow (she's pretty much like a mum to me as I lost my mum at the age of 11) I know she's going to be ecstatic bless her :D were going to wait til after our first scan to tell close friends :) congratulations all :) x

I told my gym trainer immediately as I needed to change my training program, and everyone else after the 12 week scan.

If you tell everyone earlier it can be difficult if the scan picks up a mmc, or a serious complication that means you may choose to terminate. Most people want privacy over such sensitive issues. My BIL told the whole family immediately, and then his poor wife had a mmc picked up at 12 weeks. Un-telling everyone has been traumatic for them, and my SIL is not coping too well as a result.

although I left a book open beside my bed forgetting that our cleaner was coming on Tuesday, so she will possibly have guessed, and I had to ask a couple of very hypothetical questions of my local HR rep so she will realise as well (at least that a pg is planned/possible, not that I already am).

Last time I told my boss at about 7weeks because I had exhaustion and anxiety (was unplanned), then my parents at about 8-9w and ILs on Christmas day. other people sort of guessed here and there.

Congratulations! Tell people if you and your DH want to. Lots of people knew early on for all of our DCs because of my sickness and other problems. People know that our 3 DC don't know yet about DC4 and are good about not discussing it with them.

13 weeks when I was pregnant the second time. I miscarried at 11-12 previously, so didn't get as far as my midwife checking in appointment. Third time around someone guessed at 10 weeks (tummy muscles not so good!) but I miscarried at 11 weeks. Fourth time - I told some the day after the scan (but my baggy jumpers probably gave it away). But I don't have the kind of family that would be any support either way - I don't think I've told them about the miscarriages (the bottom dropped out of my world after the first miscarriage..)

Tell whoever you want! There are no rules. I think people wait until the 12-wk scan just to avoid the added stress and grief of having to 'untell' lots of people should something go wrong. I told my mum and sister and one close friend (who lives abroad and it was the only time I was going to see her in person) prior to the scan and would have told my two best friends, but logistics conspired against me and I wanted to tell them in person. Basically, I told people who I would have gone to for support should I have miscarried or something else gone wrong.

Thanks for all your comments. I feel the same about telling people who I would turn to for support if anything happened, so we told our parents today and my siblings but we'll wait til the scan (if we can!) to tell others. We're definitely not telling dd for quite a while, she's SUCH a chatterbox!

Actually I told my gym teacher last week too, even before I got the BFP because I just knew, it felt just like first time round!

with my 1st i didnt knw till 8 weeks or so so told fam soon after with 2nd i told fam early i actually just got my bfp for dc 3 today but as i had a mc in sep 2012 i am keeping this little bundle supprise till 12 weeks maybe tell a bit earlier if i get a early scan congrats

With my last pregnancy I had suspected ectopic at 5 weeks which meant having to go to Early preg clinic twice in a week. I work nearly 2 hours from hospital, so it was obvious something was going on, as I also had a scans at 6 and 8 weeks.

Coupled with not drinking on business trips it made life easier to tell people. In the end it was the best thing for me, as when I found I had a MMC at 8 weeks I was able to be honest about it and it made dealing with work a lot easier.

However, this time DH and i are not going to tell yet as I've only just got my BFP even though AF was due ages ago, so scared it won't work out.

Just goes to show the 'best' time to tell is different for everyone, every pregnancy and every situation . Tell when you want to - it certainly didn't make it harder for me when things didn't work out, but likewise sometimes it's nice to have your own secret for a while
