Do I need to buy any bibs?

Right, I think this is probably a stupid question, but do I need bibs for a newborn? I plan to breastfeed if that is relevant!

I just doubted how much a newborn would / could possibly spill while feeding. I am amply stocked up with muslins of different sizes. But would bibs be handy too and if so, how many a day might I get through?!

Well you might have a chucker. I BF both and used bibs for ds to save outfits. Dd didn't need them until she started weaning (so for snacks and when she was teething)

So just buy a small pack of 5. You can always get more later or use then when baby is bigger.

If yours is a drooled a bib/neckerchief can reduce the number of clothes changes significantly. You can get a 3 pack and see. Some drool some dont

Yes bibs are essential! Get the soft ones that fasten with velco that tuck up under babies chin, a lot of milk can spill out of mouth and cause a sore chin and neck so i always used a bib for this purpose. I went through about 8 or 10 a day in the first couple of weeks as they feed so much lol!! I then used muslin clothes for burping my babies... They can sometimes throw up an entire feed.

dd1 needed them after feeds as even after winding she sometimes spat up a bit. Until she started moving I just tucked one under her chin. Then from about 3 mths dribbles, teething those neck bibs were great .

Depends on the baby. Usually the neck holes are too small for a newborn. I tie a muslin round their necks.

I never used them till I started weaning dd. She is bf. Also, they seem a popular present to buy - I was given about 50 million packs!

I used the little soft Tommee Tippee milk bibs that had a little padded neck ring, great for 'possets' and saved clothes!

I got given bibs and was puzzled, thinking surely there wasn't any point
until weaning time (naive me). I didn't actually use them until three months (tended to use a muslin during bfs to spare his clothes & mine from dribbles/possets, which worked reasonably as he wasn't a terribly sicky baby.)

However they are now coming in quite handy, as he tends to dribble. Otherwise his clothes get soggy, which can't be that comfortable. Also gives him something other than his sleeves to chomp on. I still don't get through as many a day as some do.

I didn't really use bibs at all when just breastfeeding (only used them during weaning) and we got loads of bibs when he was born as gifts (seriously, we must have got about 40 bibs!).

I tended to use muslins for dribbles etc rather than bibs, but my son wasn't really a vomiter (he was too greedy!) or a drooler, and when he did drool it tended to run round his neck to his ears (so bib wouldn't have caught it anyway). But all babies are different.

If you do decide to buy some, I wouldnt buy too many if this is your first, as trust me, you will get loads as presents (bibs are a common gift for babies)

I didn't need them until the teething dribbles began (and seemed never to stop). Personally found Muslins better for milky sick but ds wasn't a sicky baby.

For older babies bibs with press studs on the back are better as baby can't pull them off so easily!

My daughters now 8 days old, and I was fully planning to breastfeed (and persevered for 4 days.) Turns out she has 100% tongue tie and breastfeeding her was actually doing severe damage to my nipples- and am now obviously formula feeding. Moral of the story? You never know what's going to happen and worrying about a lack of bibs should be the last thing on your mind when you bring your beautiful baby home! Invest in a pack just in case :)

Bibs are not essential. We used muslins until weaning when we used long sleeved bibs.

DS was a dribbly baby too, but I have an irrational dislike of children wearing bibs all the time so I just changed his top.

I got loads as gifts, but very rarely used them until I was weaning DS. He was a puker, so I tended to use muslins as they covered more!

I'm not planning on buying any. I remember my SiL got bought loads. If no one buys you any its pretty easy to pop to next, tesco etc after lo is born

Yes yes yes - DS is a pukey drooly little monster who needs a new bib every feed, although muslins are essential too. Avoid bibs with prints on them - the print isn't waterproof so it just makes a mess. The best are towelling with a waterproof background and applix fastening (not prestuds or velcro).
