Went to my EPU today as I was having cramping pains along with brown discharge.
I though I was 7 wks 4 days as my LMP was the 18th nov.
Had a transvaginal scan and it shows that I am 5 wks 5 days. We could see the sac and there was something in the sac but we couldn't see properly. She said she could see a flicker there too but I couldn't. She did some bloods and I should have them tomorrow, and I'm back next week for another scan. I know I won't see alot at 5 wks and was quiet shocked when she said I was. Just wondering if anyone ever had anything like this with there dates? My date are exact as I use an app to keep an eye on AF.

Still have alot of cramps and back ache.. Confused

Are your cycles long and when did you get your bfp? I went for one at 7+5 it said I was 6+5 I don't believe that at all tbh, and from what I've read on the internet early scans arnt overly accurate. My early scan with ds1 was 5/6 days differnt to dating scan.

Cramps and back pain is very normal too, try not to worry x

3peasinapod · 10/01/2013 21:06

Thanks beckie90, my last would have been near 33 days but that would have been my longest cycle. I got my BFP at 4 wk mark think I may have conceived on the 1st or 2nd of dec. feel like all my symptoms have disappeared and I'm just waiting to MC. Looks like a long wk ahead for meHmm dreading it.

My early scan put me 8 days back (said I was 7+2 at 8+3), but 12 week scan I was bang on the original date based on LMP. Think it's harder to tell at the early one.

Guavasforbreakfast · 10/01/2013 21:19

Hope everything works out ok, my symptoms seemed to come and go in first trimester so try not to worry. And I also had sharp cramps every now and then from about 6 weeks and everything is fine so far.

PetiteRaleuse · 10/01/2013 21:19

I had the same issue with my DD2 who was born nice and healthy about 12 weeks ago. I went for a scan at what I thought was seven weeks, and there was no heartbeat. Doc told me to expect the worst, and as I have a history of mc I spent the next two weeks preparing myself for the worst, to the point where I warned my boss I might need a day off one Friday as that is the day my OB GYN does surgery (i.e. D&C in this case).

Went back two weeks later, there was a heartbeat and she was ten days out on my predictions. Remained smaller than expected for my EDD right through pregnancy.

Early scans are great, but can throw up needless worry in cases such as this. Best of luck with the next scan but please try not to worry too much. Sometimes our dates just don't match with the norm, and that's fine too.

3peasinapod · 10/01/2013 21:21

I really hope that will be my case, I have been put back nearly 13 days. Trying not to worry but it's always there. Hopefully I will have bloods at some stage tomorrow and they will bring good news.. Grin

Fingers crossed for you. I know only too well how stressful early pregnancy is..

3peasinapod · 11/01/2013 15:55

Hi,
I got my bloods back 556 for my hcg so that's low for a 7 wk pregnancy. My scan was dating at 5 wks 5 days and even at that its still quiet low. I'm being brough in Monday morning to re scan and go from there. My hopes have dashed and all feeling of being pregnant is gone. Hmm Gutted but onwards and upwards as they say. Just so thankful for what I have and extra cuddles all round tonight..

I thought they were more concerned with doubling than with the number?

I found this :

The hCG hormone level in the human body doubles approximately every 2.2 days during the first trimester of pregnancy. Detectable levels of hCG start at 5 mIU/ml during the first week of gestation and rise to 100,000 mIU/ml at 2 to 3 months. Values decline to 10% to l5% of peak concentrations during 2nd and 3rd trimesters. In normal circumstances, first morning urine samples approximate serum hCG levels which reach 5 to 50 mIU/ml within one(1) week of gestational age.

HCG Levels during Pregnancy
After Conception
Week of Pregnancy: Normal HCG Levels:
MIU/ML
1 5-50 (avg. 14)
2 5-50 (avg. 21)
3 5-50 (avg. 42)
4 10-425
5 19-7,340
6 1,080-56,500
7-8 7,650-229,000
9-12 25,700-288,000
13-16 13,300-254,000
17-24 4,060-165,400
25-40 3,640-117,000
The above table shows the typical ranges in hCG levels during pregnancy. *Statistically, the ranges are necessarily broad as each pregnancy cycle and hormone level is unique to the individual and extreme readings either way are possible in a very small percentage of pregnancies. However the table does clearly indicate the rapid increase in hCG hormone during the first trimester.

So don't give up hope just yet, fx it is just earlier than you thought. Hoping for the best for you.

I don't know whether this helps, but my early scan put me over a week behind, but like knew I knew exactly how far I was. I also spotted a few times so I was very worried, but at my 12 week scan I was dated exactly where I though I was. I remember searching the web at the time and someone mentioning that the orientation of the foetus is difficult to ascertain this early and can change the measurement.

Everything crossed for you xx

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 11/01/2013 16:56

I'm sorry you are going through this.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, I have experienced what you are going through and it did end in MC.

I'm never sure when seeing posts like this whether I should share my experience but I guess I want you to know you're not alone.

If it doesn't end well, we are here for you.

tickle33 · 11/01/2013 16:59

For both of my pregnancies my EDD date went back everytime I had a scan. Both EDD dates were put back almost exactly 2 weeks and then my 1st dd (birth weight 8lb 12) was 8 days late and my 2nd dd (birth weight 9lb 9) was 14 days late. Midwife put it down to the fact I have a long cycle

PetiteRaleuse · 11/01/2013 17:01

Sorry to hear that. I mentioned above I have a history of miscarriage and one did end like that. I was pregnant with a healthy baby a couple of months later though, and then again less than a year after she was born (which was the experience I described above). I found that my fear of miscarrying was a lot worse than the actual experience of it happening. I don't know if that helps.

Do take care x

PandaWatch · 11/01/2013 17:14

I went for an early scan and they said I was 5 days behind my EDD but gave the impression this was no time at all for it to be out by, so I wouldn't necessarily take it as a bad sign to be 13 days off. However, at my 12 week scan I was only 1 day behind so there's every chance the earky scan is incorrect.

When you calculated your EDD did you take into account your cycle length and length of your luteal phase?

I hope everything goes well for you x

JollyToddles · 11/01/2013 17:16

I thought I was 12 weeks, went to the scan and they said 10 weeks 2 days. They were right - ds arrived at their 40 weeks ish.

3peasinapod · 12/01/2013 08:50

Many thanks for all your kind words.

I will have my bloods done again on Monday, it would be great to see them double. As I live a good bit away from the early pregnancy unit and working around kids and school its hard to get up there. But the lasy that scans me said I can go up early Monday morning which is great, DH can do the school run etc.

My cycles are roughly 33 days, and all charted. So that would put me out a few day. Still not adding up. The sonographer had said that it could all catch up to my dates.

All symtoms have all gone. Sore boobs have gone right back to normal and no sickness. I had nearly gone off food but that's all back. Cramps and back pain is now taken its place.

Im preparing for Monday, and if my outcome isn't good (and I really hope little bean is growing) I really don't want to go through a d&c. I've had this done before and had an awful experience. I know it's the quickest way but was wondering if there is any other way?? If I dont go naturally.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 12/01/2013 09:22

Sorry to hear your symptoms have disappeared.
If it doesn't end well, rather than a D&C you could go for medical management. It a medication called Misoprostol, it can be swallowed or used as a pessary. It contracts the uterus. It does mean though that you may spend quite a lot of time at the EPU getting scanned to check its progressing and your womb is empty.
Some women, dependant on the hospital, can go in as an in patient for a couple of days while they take it if they wish.
Good luck.

Littlemissexpecting · 13/01/2013 01:31

Sorry your going through all this worry. I've had 3 mc's and it truly is a horrible waiting game.
My consultant told me that early scans can not be used to date a pregnancy accurately. Needs to be >10 weeks to give a true idea of gestation. I am now 17 weeks and was scanned every week from 6-13 and the dates changed every week! What was key was that it was growing consistently and hb still there. Don't read too much into your hcg results. There is such a wide range that 1 number cannot tell you if everything is progressing, what will is if the number increases next week. Good luck and if the worst does happen speak to them about your previous d&c experience. Take care

They say early scans aren't as accurate. My first scan (which I had as just come off depo therefore uncertain dates) showed 5 +4. Exactly two weeks later I had another (due to a hit of bleeding) and baby had grown to 9 weeks! My 12 week confirmed the same date as the second scan and tge pornographer said that they just get more accurate the closer to 12 weeks you get.

Hope that helps.

mysterymeg · 13/01/2013 10:57

Oh my god my post is an auto correct disaster!

Pornographer = sonographer lol

3peasinapod · 13/01/2013 11:55

So so sorry to hear that 3peasinapod.
Be good to yourself, take time to mend physically and emotionally. It can take weeks to get back to your normal energy levels and months to feel like yourself emotionally.

PetiteRaleuse · 16/01/2013 13:44

Hope you are OK OP.

3peasinapod · 16/01/2013 19:26

Thank you all for your lovely messages and kind words.

I'm doing well and goin through the motions.

Again many thanks ladies, fingers crosse in a few months ill be happily planning to conceive again.

Xxxx
