Hyperemesis Support

We need a new thread.

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable.

I would like to thank MOH MOP Ovaltine Caramellokoalalover (I think she's changed her nickname) Fluffy, Horsey Kali and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

I always thought it was weird - every time they put me on a drip they won't even let me try to eat or drink at all even if I want to. I'm sure they said something about measurinf my wee but mist of the time the nurses couldn't be bothered. so if it happens again I'm going to ignore them and just go for it if I feel like it!

Haylebop12 · 20/03/2013 08:58

tallyra not sure why they don't let you eat or drink Hmm but yes when I'm on IV fluids I have my input and output measured. It's to ensure your not just retaining the fluids. Well that's what I was told?

LucindaE · 20/03/2013 10:14

Littleducks I am so glad our chorus of advice to 'go to A and E' put an encouraged you, and FlowersHappy Birthday from me, too, so sorry you have to have it in hospital, but the baby will be the best present ever.
wavesandsmiles I'm glad you got to A and E, too, and hugs about OH moving out. It may be ultimately the best thing but that doesn't stop it being hurtful. What are you doing about nourishment? However are you keeping gong? Are there vitamins in the fluids they give you? Happy Birthday to DS.
Humphrey So glad thread helped your case!
Reebok Oh dear, poor you, can you get a sick note even for some days or is it out of the question? Hugs, I was so happy when you turned the corner, it is so discouraging for you back on meds. I suppose that is cyclezine as I remember the doctor wouldn't prescribe Ondansetron? It must be awful battling on, especially if you are a teacher. At least the Easter Break is nearly here.
Littlemiss Sorry about puking episodes - horrible, and that heartburn is dreadful, I didn't know when I had it for the duration, but it seems ranatadine is good, might the dr prescribe that?
Hayley Great news about scan. Mother hen anxious as usual that you are rushing back to work. You don't want to go too early and have a relapse.
Goldie Lovely to hear from you, you suffered throughout, and so it's extra nice that the awful memory of that has receeded. Baby twenty one weeks already?!
Rainbow How are you?
Talyra Hugs. I hope the consultant is full of good news at your appointment, I have one of my good feelings about you.
Sorry to anyone rudely ignored.

I am now in a ward in 5th bag of fluids. Not going to plan though as ketone level went down to 2 but had gone back to 3 despite me eating breakfast.

I'm going to get a scan today though which hopefully will be reassuring.

HumphreyCobbler · 20/03/2013 11:22

glad you are getting some fluids littlducks,

Flowers for your birthday

PrincessRichards · 20/03/2013 15:27

Glad you've been sorted out little nice to hear a story of someone getting treated.

Well my treatment was pretty useless this week, since going in Monday I've kept nothing down, looks like I'll be back again Monday and hopefully will get different meds which might work, I can hope eh?!

Pollaidh · 20/03/2013 17:19

Trying to work out if it's really misty or the dehydration is causing my eyesight to blur and mist again. Does anyone else get this? I'm not particularly dehydrated today (trace according to ketosticks).

Pollaidh · 20/03/2013 17:28

Happy birthday Little Ducks, what a way to celebrate...

Princess sorry you're having such a tough time. Hope you find something that works soon.

Talyra and Little in hospital they wouldn't let me eat (not that I felt like it) until I'd had the 1st bag of fluid and a couple of hours on the anti-emetics. After that they were happy for me to try to eat and said I could have whatever I want. The doctor, bless her, made the toast herself, buttering to my exact specifications (the other day the sight of too much butter triggered hours of vomiting).

RainbowsFriend · 20/03/2013 18:53

Happy birthday from me too. Hope you feel better soon x

Well I feel a fraud on this thread now, as since I've discovered I can keep down small quantities of sour proper lemonade or pineapple juice, my days arent half so bad!

Before I wasnt able to drink anything before 11 and the day would be constant severe nausea with frequent throwing up.

Now, if I have a very small glass of lemonade or pineapple juice first thing - I can eat a small breakfast, then repeat small glass/small snack at 11, then 1, then 3 then 5!

So I haven't thrown up more than twice a day in the past few days, and the nausea is much more bearable.... I think I had got myself really dehydrated - I'm peeing more than twice a day now as well....

So of course now I'm worried that the pregnancy is failing.... Hmm

LucindaE · 20/03/2013 18:54

Princess Oh no, this is awful, you must be feeling bad. I suppose those ketones are on the up and up? Does this include fluids, as a rule of thumb they are meant to treat it as an emergency if you can't keep any fluids down for twenty four hours...
Poll That sounds such a nice doctor!

Sorry to those having a rubbish time Sad I'm still vomiting a lot, but the daily fluids are doing me good and it is nice knowing that the cannula is in til Friday after my fluids then. It's a bit boring sitting round there all morning, but at least it is avoiding dehydration!

Review with the consultant on Friday, but looking forward to a day off on Saturday so I can take my DCs swimming to celebrate DS's birthday (which is tomorrow) and treat them for doing so well at school following meetings with their teachers over the past week.

Thinking of you all

Reebok · 20/03/2013 20:03

Lucinda, wish there was a way I could take more time off but unfortunately not. Finding it really hard as the kids I teach are very young. Yep I'm back on cyclizine as my gp is an idiot! What can I do though?! Ah what's keeping me going is that it is almost Easter break! Thank god for school holidays.

PrincessRichards · 20/03/2013 20:15

Hi Lucinda

Fluids are not too bad at the moment I'm managing a bit but I think after a week or so I get dehydrated as I can't drink enough quick enough so it finally catches up with me.

Waves it sounds like your coping better since getting treated, enjoy swimming.

I'm wishing everyone a sick free day soon x

chocciemousse · 20/03/2013 20:27

littleduck happy birthday. I'm glad to hear you are getting the treatment you need in hospital. Like you, I struggled with the gp and had to go straight to the hospital myself thanks to the advice from the lovely ladies on this thread.

I hope everyone else is surviving ok.

I've managed to keep most things down since leaving hospital but the diarrhoea is starting again. Is anyone else having both d & v? I don't have anything viral, it is apparently a less common pregnancy symptom. My mum had it too. Feeling ridiculously nauseous and as someone else mentioned (sorry finding it difficult to trawl through threads on my phone) I think I would feel better if I was sick.

reebok I may possibly be back at work next week. I teach yr 1 and don't know how I will cope. I don't know how you are managing!

RainbowsFriend · 20/03/2013 21:20

yes I get the runs as well ...

fl0b0t · 20/03/2013 21:50

Hi all, had a quick flick through but super tired so will catch up properly later!

Work's a bit mad, so I'm tired, writing this from a hotel room after a lovely warm bath......

Feeling pretty awful, but going home early tomorrow and will have a nap :)

Haylebop12 · 20/03/2013 21:55

little how did your scan go!

lucinda I'm only working 2/3 shifts this week and although I usually run shifts I'm on with another management member so if I want to go home I can without arranging cover. On annual leave next week so can rest :)

princess cyclizine has failed on me four times now but they still haven't changed it. Bit reluctant to as none of the others I have tried stopped the vomiting at all. Been feeling much ether since sat so hoping to be off them soon.

For anyone that has taken anti emetics then stopped, when did you know you were ready to stop?? I really don't want to take them for longer then necessary.

Reebok · 21/03/2013 07:27

Choccie, how far along are you? I won't pretend it's easy. In fact it's the hardest thing to do when you feel so rubbish. When I did have those weeks of relief, it was slightly better aside from the reflux/heartburn. Hopefully you too will have some relief. It helps to have a helpful TA. Mine is superwoman.

LucindaE · 21/03/2013 09:28

Chocckie I had that, in fact, once I had liquid coming out of all orifices at once Shock. A waste...It's horrible, and another source of possible dehydration. and the iron pills set it off particularly. I don't actually know a medicine they recommend for that but surely there must be one?
You do seem to be going back a bit early if you have to teach children so young and lively. When are the Easter Holidays in your area?
Reebok Flo still battling on...
wavesandsmiles I hate to think how much weight you have lost. When did you last actually manage to eat and retain food and how on earth have you the energy to swim? I am hoping too that they are right and this treatment has its effect but why did they break it off halfway through if that is what they are aiming for?
Hayley and Princess I don't suppose, as in Humphrey's case the advice on MOH's website might change their minds? sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/.
littleducks I hope better. Rainbow how are the liquids staying down?
Back soon.

Hi all,

I'm now on fortisip drinks to get calories into me. My weight has actually stabilised this week, but I do have a pretty sizeable bump now. Maybe it just appears big in proportion though....

Fluids are chugging through now, then I'll be home for a sleep as heartburn is making it hard to settle at night. Swimming on Saturday is just going to be at a little health suite so I'll just sit in the pool whilst the DCs swim about. I am definitely not up to real activity of any kind....

Hospital have been very apologetic about interrupting my treatment, and it all seems to be going a bit better now. I managed some toast at 1am this morning and although some of it came up in this mornings vomit, I must have kept some down. So, if I can start to tolerate that a bit, and get some fortisips staying down, I should start to feel a bit better.

Wishing you all a day that is survivable

chocciemousse · 21/03/2013 11:08

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one with the runs so maybe I'm as abnormal as the doctors make me feel and midwives make me feel. Blush

Reebok I will be 17 weeks on Monday. I'm glad you have a great TA. Unfortunately mine couldn't be more lazy if she tried and is always off. (coincidently after being on the drink)

Lucinda the Easter holidays begin next Friday and we have 2 weeks off before the start of the new term. I don't there is anything I can take for the runs. I have gone off my pregnancy vitamins and have just been taking folate and thiamine in case they were the case. It hasn't made any difference though.

In other news, I had my 16 week midwife appointment this morning. I was hoping to hear the babies heartbeat but she just took my blood pressure, tested my urine and made another appointment for me. Is that normally what happens?

RoomForALittleOne · 21/03/2013 12:48

Choccie, that is normal now the NICE guidelines have changed so that the heartbeat doesn't need to be listened to until 28 weeks (if my MIL who is a midwife is correct).

I'm 24 weeks today so baby is officially viable! Having had premmie babies and miscarriages before, I like getting to 24 weeks Smile My nausea in between ondansetron doses is getting worse. I keep wondering if the nausea is going to tip over into constant vomiting despite the ondansetron at some point. I am very fed up now. I just want to eat and drink normally and feel OK. I think the pressure of the growing baby is making things worse.

fl0b0t · 21/03/2013 13:21

room I think being fedup is the only way you can feel.... The constant nausea is so draining :( well done for getting to 24 wks though! Very releiving and exciting!

BankWuggery · 21/03/2013 14:05

Hi everyone. I posted a few times upthread- am ttc no.3 after 2 HG pregnancies and whilst the excitement of the thought of another baby is very alluring, I know the likelihood of HG is quite high. I so feel for you all. just wanted to come and give you all a virtual hug- once my family is grown I want to train as a post natal doula but knowing how hard HG pregnancies are maybe I will do the antenatal stuff too, then I can support folks like us lot.

Anyone else here on their 2/3/4 whatever pg and went into it anticipating it would lead to HG? What things did you consider when making that decision? Curious- have we considered everything!
