Anyone had the injection to speed up placenta delivery?

I'm 36+5 so the impending birth is very much on my mind! I'd decided a while ago that I'd be happy to have the injection to speed up the delivery of the placenta but I read somewhere recently that it can make you be/feel sick.

Would appreciate it if anyone could say from experience whether this is true or not.

I don't cope well with nausea or sickness so it would be helpful to know so I can make a final decision on it - thanks!

I had a retained placenta with dd1, and had it, but did have it as part of my birth plan. Didn't make me feel unwell at all. Can't quite remember if I had it the second time with dd2. I'm sure I put it on birth plan to have it again, due to what happened with dd1.

Will you be having g&a? That can have funny effects, but again worked for me no problem.

I am very prone to nausea and get it really bad. Bad travel sickness in cars, everything. I had the injection, although if I hadn't had discussed it with the midwife beforehand, I would remember neither the injection nor the delivery of placenta. Defs no sickness at all.

I had it with both of mine (it was in my birth plan) - no sickness with either of them

I had it with all three.

I dont remember ever delivering a placenta!

I was a little sick after dc3 but I hadnt felt right before the injection, and drinking a full bottle of lucozade straight after delivery was probably not the best idea.

No sickness but injection site hurt like hell for a week afterwards. Refused to ever have it again (3 more deliveries).

Chose not to have it the third time.

Had it both times and wasn't sick with it. I was sick during labour tho, my body clearly didn't like lucozade.

I think I had it but I never felt it or felt sick either.

I had it each time. Never heard of nausea as possible side effect and definitely didn't feel sick with it. Was great as it meant the placenta came out quickly while I cuddled my baby, pretty unnoticed. Could have the wonderful post birth bath quickly too.

I had the injection last time and it didn't make me feel sick. I don't even remember having any further contractions to deliver the placenta, the only thing I remember is the midwife saying "do a little push", which I did & the placenta just slithered out.

P.S. I'm now 36+5 with DC2, here's hoping it's not too much longer for either of us!

Barely noticed it, asked to be asked in the birth plan as liked the idea of being vaguely natural. When it came to it, was happy to have it as didnt fancy waiting an unknown amount of time with associated pain after giving birth. Don't remember feeling it or nausea but then I pretty quickly got high on the g&a whilst being stitched (don't think I was using it properly during the birth but I know better for dc2 in 20-odd weeks time!).

Didn't notice the injection

Have to admit I found it a little uncomfortable the mw's massing my tum to encourage placenta out-but compared to labour pain, it's nothing

You're too busy snuggling with your newbie/taking pics/having some tea and toast to notice much tbh

You're just on such a high you gave a new baby and relief labour is over with!

I had it with the first two (hospital births), had no nausea afterwards - afterpains were atrocious though. Refused it with the third (homebirth) - no afterpains. I'll be refusing it with number 4 as well.

Had it with each of my DC (DC3 born on 3rd January so fresh in my mind!)
Had no sickness with DC1 and 2 but did this time.
To be honest after I'd given birth to mister huge head the sickness was the last thing on my mind! (I hate being sick but it was only 3-4 times so not too bad at all)
Strangely the gas and air made me sick during labour with DC2 but not with the others so I guess you can't predict what will happen as every birth is different.

I had it, and it didn't make me feel sick (and I also suffer travel sickness, and still have ms at 19 weeks so vomit quite easily!) but it didn't work very well in terms of getting the placenta out. Took a further hour of syntocin for me to get it out, and was just about to get surgery, when the consultant gave a good yank and got it out.

I wouldn't be keen on having it again as it was an hour of not being able to hold my little boy, and having more painful contractions.

No issues here either, in fact I didn't even notice them giving it and had to ask afterwards if it had been done or not! No real after pains or pain at the injection site either, in fact I have no memory of it at all. Get it over with, I think was in my plan! Everyone's different but after labour etc, there's so much else going on and normally you have an empty stomach anyway, if it was so bad they wouldn't give it so routinely?

Had it with DS1 - no sickness, didn't even notice injection going in and placenta delivered with no problems.

Had planned to have it with DS2 given that there'd been no issues first time and I didn't like the sound of a potentially lengthy period of pain/pushing while I delivered the placenta naturally. In the event however, as I got out of the pool the mw checked and said the placenta looked ready to come out and it did without the injection.

I had thought that you had to decide whether to have the injection in advance as it's usually given as the head is delivered, but the mws at DS2's birth said up to an hour later would be fine so you can adopt a 'wait and see' approach. Might be worth discussing with your mw if this could be an option?

I'm another who is very sensitive to nausea and sickness.

Had it with DD as was losing blood fo to a tear so they wanted to get the placenta delivered asap. No side effects at all. Had it again with DS as seemed no reason not to after having it the previous labour IYSWIM. Again no side effects.

Congrats Pochemuchka DS was born on 31 Dec so know what you mean about fresh in your mind!

Had it with both of mine: injection didn't hurt, no sickness, can't even remember delivering placenta (too busy with new baby I suppose!), no pain after. I was 38 for 1st and 41 for 2nd x
