I was wondering if anybody has taken acyclovir 400mg tablets throughout pregnancy. I am 6 weeks pregnant and stopped taking the tablets as soon as I found out I was pregnant and now have an out break, wondering if it is safe to take? I am new to mumsnet and have heard this is a good forum for advice. thank

When my HSV symptoms started, I thought I had a yeast infection. The following day, I had a swollen lymph node in my neck behind my ear. A couple days later, I felt stinging on my labia while showering, which I attributed to ingrown hairs. Later, I noticed bleeding and small ulcers. They began with dull pain and tingling, then my entire genital area was swollen and red. I’ve had an outbreak every month like clockwork dealing with the pain, itching and blisters i got tired of antiviral drugs and decided to try herbal medicine, i found Dr. Bulukona Website: bulukonaherbaltemple.wixsite.com/bulukona-temple and i discovered he was a professional in herbal medication and he has helped many people, i contacted him, we talked on phone and i confirmed he was genuine, i did all what he told me to do, i received the medicine, used it as he has prescribed and glory be to God almighty i am completely cured, i went back to my doctor to confirm it. They say there's no cure but my case was different.

Hi :)

I'm just wondering how your baby is doing? I hope everything is fine after your worries with acyclovir. I am currently 6 weeks and in the same situation you were in. Doctor has advised me to stay on but I'm not sure how I feel about it. Would be great to know if your baby was safe and healthy as it would give me some reassurance x

Hi, congratulations! I stayed on the tablets my whole pregnancy and 6 months after just in case of any flares while I were recovering. My little boy is now almost two and he is the most happy healthy little boy! So please don’t worry, your baby will be absolutely fine. X

@Happy61 aw thank you so much for your reply! I'm so happy for you. There really is enough worry throughout pregnancy without the added worry of taking medication and not knowing if you're doing good or harm. But this is hugely reassuring to hear. 🙏 best wishes to you and your little boy x

@ChaE05 I wanted to see if you did end up staying on the tablets throughout your pregnancy and if everything turned out ok? What dose were you on if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve been prescribed a prophylactic dose of 400mg 3x a daily for the last month but I might just take is twice a day as I haven’t had any recurrence during pregnancy.

ChaE05 · 25/02/2024 13:17

@MOMG I only took them for the first 12 weeks as I was worrying too much...and I didn't get any outbreaks! I was however advised to start taking them again from 36 weeks I think it was. I'm not sure of the dose. Just to make sure I didn't have an outbreak close to labour. I stopped taking them once my baby was born. I had an outbreak about a week later. But nothing since and he is now 3 months old 😊

Hello wondered if anyone can help, I am 10+5 and I first contracted herpes 10 years ago, im currently having an flare up and the urgent care nurse gave me a 5 day course 5 x a day.

I’ve read alot about taking this when pregnant but it’s mainly later on; I’ve read on this thread that potentially you shoukdnt take it during first trimester?

the nurse said that most guidelines say only take if the benefit outweighs the cons… how do you decide that?

I rarely ever take meds when I have a outbreak touchwood symptoms only last a few days and Ive learnt to manage them…

is it dangerous to let it heal naturally whilst pregnant or is that ok?

I have felt much more poorly this time which I’m putting down to pregnancy.

any help would be great x

@Oldermama86 I had at least one outbreak with my first pregnancy and decided not to take it as it was not super painful and would pass in a few days. I then took suppressive acyclovir from 36 weeks. My Dr made an off hand comment saying "as long as you're out of first trimester it's fine to take" but I think taking a couple of tablets for the occasional outbreak is totally fine, probably more if it was being taken every day in the early months.
You can get Lemon balm cream which is all natural that helps with soreness and itching.
