Do I have to see doctor to tell him I'm pregnant...

Or can I just phone the surgery to arrange my first midwife appointment? Last time it seemed a bit pointless seeing the doctor IYKWIM, or do I need to actually go in and see him in order to get the referral? Thank you!

I think it varies depending on area. We dealt directly with the midwives both times.

Oh and at how many weeks should I go in? I'm a bit nervous about going in too early as I had an early loss at 6 weeks this time last January. I am 6 weeks pregnant. Thank you!

I had to see a doctor the first time to get it confirmed, the second third fourth fifth and sixth times I just called and made a MW appt, the receptionists were fine about it, the MW was based at the surgery though, it might make a difference if they are based at the hospital, no harm in asking though.

Thank you JoJo, I will give them a ring and see what they say!

I lived in the city centre for my first pregnancy, so had to be referred by my gp for my first pregnancy, midwives posted out documents, first appointment was 12 week scan. We had moved for current pregnancy and I booked straight in at 8 weeks (what i thought was 8 weeks) with midwife...

I wouldn't leave it to late as your midwife will need to get you an appointment for your 12 week scan, I was confident of my dates but the 12 week scan which was booked in for 13 weeks I turned out to be 14 weeks so couldn't have nuchal fold test.

Gp's receptionist gives you forms to fill in and then hands over a MW pack with her number and sorts out your perscription for folic acid if you need it. So you don't see your GP but have to visit the surgery.

every surgery and area does it differently, ring them and see what they expect you to do, the only way you'll know :)

congratulations!

Thanks, will give them a ring! Smile

First time I saw the GP, second time o had the mw office number so rang and left a message. They got in touch and told me when to arrange appt for etc.

Good luck & congratulations.
