Do you think I'd get an early scan?

History is that I had a MC which started on 29th October and, scan the next day showed that what should have been an 8+3 pregnancy had not progressed past 6 weeks, I then continued to bleed for the next week.

I have not had a period since then and on 19th December I did a pregnancy test thinking that if my brain knew I was not pregnant then my period would finally arrive and then we can TTC again. Imagine my surprise when it came up positive. (Had been told in the past that our chances of conceiving naturally were very slim although we did have a DC in 2009, so to get pregnant two cycles running is a bit of a miracle).

So now I need to know how pregnant am I? Stupidly I did not keep track of things which now may have been significant. I remember feeling queasy from about the second week of December (blamed this on a hangover and an extremely busy four days at work). I also remember some very light brown blood either the last week of Nov or first week of December, wondering now if this could be implantation bleeding?

Say when I took the test and I was only just pregnant, then I would be six weeks by now but I rather think that I am probably further along than that. I got my scan date through and it is the end of Jan by which time I would be at least nearly 10 weeks but could be as much as 13. I have a drs appt tomorrow to ask for an early scan considering my history (also had a MC in Mar 2007 at 5 weeks) and also to help date it but do you think they will or am I just wasting their time?

Yes am pretty sure you'd be able to get an early scan in your situation - firstly because of you being unsure of your dates and secondly because of the MCs. Hope everything works out for you

Hi - could you buy one of those digital tests that tell you how many weeks from conception? (then add 2 weeks to give normal number of weeks pregnant).

The only other thing I don't know is that all tests detect HCG hormone when you are pregnant, and I don't know how long this takes to leave your body after a misscarriage

Hi I had a very similar experience to you where I MCed and then got pg again without having a 'LMP' and had absolutely no idea about dates (FWIW I think you are more fertile after an MC and that was certainly the case in my case).

I didn't get an early scan but then I never even thought to ask for one. Amazingly when I went for the 12-wk scan the dates they guessed were bang on (unlike this time where I knew EXACT dates but still ended up being too late for the nuchal scan to be done).

Anyway congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope it all goes swimmingly :)

MulledWineAndScully · 03/01/2013 14:45

Ah yes I forgot to add that I did buy a clearblue digital test which helped me make a guess at how far on I was.

Technically the 12 week scan is the dating scan though, so unsure as to wether they'd give you one just for that, without any signs of something being not right (pain/blood loss) I think it would depend on the resources available in your area and money.

I also would bear in mind that after a mc sometimes pregnancy hormones can hang around for weeks afterwards, mine took 3-4 weeks after mc to get a bfn. There is always an outside chance that it could be leftover hormones?

Wishing you luck :)

And don't forget you can always opt to have a private scan and pay yourself for it, just google private pregnancy scan + your area.

Skinnydecafflatte · 03/01/2013 15:46

Oh if 12 week is a dating one, then perhaps not I guess. I hate to waste the doctors time. Frustrating, I can?t believe after 2 years of TTC and carefully checking dates etc, this happens. Thanks for good wishes, I really hope this one stays the course as I am 38 so not a lot of time left.

I am pretty sure that this is a new pregnancy as I feel quite queasy a lot of the time and my boobs are very sore. Pregnancy symptoms had long cleared up and these new ones have come on in the last few weeks. I did do a test back in November some time (can?t for the life of me remember when) which was negative, and then it was a digital one on 19th Dec and then I also (as I still found it hard to believe) did a cheapy one last week which came up positive instantly.

Regarding Clearblue digital, it will only tell me up to 3+ weeks (ie 5 weeks) and as I am pretty sure I must be at least 6 weeks, it won?t be that helpful I guess.

I couldn't get an early scan despite bleeding and problems. Unfortunately I think your best chance is a private scan.

My midwife got me in for a scan at 7 weeks. I have had a history on 3 mc and was not sleeping, every hour felt like a lifetime. She rang the epu and arranged for them to see me.

beckie90 · 03/01/2013 16:11

Ask for a hcg blood test at doctors, whilst it can't fully give you the exact weeks, they can give you an idea, cause there's certain ranges for certain weeks, doctors took mine last time said I was around 5 weeks and I was xxx

kittykatsforever · 03/01/2013 18:08

Sounds like its a definate new pregnancy then but as your date falls between 10-13wks that is what they'd be after for a dating and actually if your on the earlier side it will be more inconvenient for them as they will have to do another if you want the downs screening as it has to be between 11.5 and 13.5, as far as I know you won't get early scans anyway without symptoms of it being wrong this time such as bleeding etc but as you have your date allready and think your over 6wks it won't be long to wait, I too got pregnant straight after mc with this pregnancy but definatly ovd a week later then normal if you classed the mc as cd1 and think that that is quite common

ThreeWheelsGood · 03/01/2013 21:43

it really depends on your area. I was told after my miscarriage that when I was next pregnant I'd be welcome to self-refer to the early pregnancy unit for an early scan (next time had scan at 9 weeks)

floatyjosmum · 04/01/2013 07:37

It really does depend in the area. If had three mc and bleeding in this pregnancy and still no scan! We paid for 2 private scansion I was getting myself in a state!

Chocaholics · 04/01/2013 07:50

I am currently pregnant and when I found out I hadn't had a period in months (they were all over the place from having my DD) and going by that I would have been about 20 weeks which I obviously wasn't as there was no sign of a bump. I saw my MW and she requested a scan ASAP for me and I got one 2 days later and they dated the pregnancy from that. I was 10 weeks and then also had the normal 12 week scan 2 weeks later.
Good luck OP I hope they will scan you, it very much sounds like it depends on which part of the country you're in.
