Newborn baby sizes

I bought two outfits from mamas and papas for my new arrival in new baby size which is up to 10lbs. They weren't cheap but I wanted something nice for her first pics etc. I'm now wondering whether to exchange them for 0-3 months as they will last a bit longer. Obviously neither you or I know what she will weigh but I was just wondering if others have had this 'dilemma'?

we always got use out if the newborn sized clothes - they even seemed quite big when first put on. It will depend on your babies weight of course - my 2 were 7lb 11oz and 7lb 13oz respectively. You might find that your lo spends more time in sleepsuits than actual outfits so buy plenty of them in a variety of sizes.

You can't really know. A large baby may move quickly into 0-3 a small one may find new baby large. Either is likely to last a few weeks.

My bump measured on the 50% line throughout and dd was full term, so I thought she'd be around the average weight but she was only 6lb 4oz and new baby was huge on her (0-3 like a sleeping bag) so she wore tiny baby for 6 weeks.

They are like romper suit and hat things so I think she will sleep I'm them too. I just don't know whether to stick with the size I have or buy a bigger size which will last longer but may be too big for her when she is first born!

I would probably go for the 0-3 month size as mamas and papas come up small, and as said above they mainly wear sleepsuits in the early weeks (or at least both of mine did). You will get longer use out of the next size

I can get my dp to exchange them I guess but don't u have to wash the, before they wear them?

Btw she has been average size throughout all her scans. Maybe I should wait for her next scan

Mine were in newborn size for about a week each, they were born at 9lb 2oz and 9lb 8oz. Luckily mostly of our stuff was in 0-3 but anything we did have in newborn only got worn once.

Second what previous poster said, don't bother with outfits when they're tiny, sleep suits are much more comfortable for the baby and so much easier for you.

You don't have to wash before wearing but I've heard some people like to anyway. It's up to you but not a necessity.

I distinctly remember lovingly washing and ironing all dd's baby clothes before she arrived. By the time she was here and we were in utter chaos finally parents I just grabbed whatever I could find in the middle of the night when she had soaked her existing clothes with wee or sick.. :o she was fine with both. With DS we just took them straight from the pack and used them and he is fine too! congrats on your bump. :)

Oh and ds was a huge 9lb inner, and so lasted in newborn things for all of a week.

This has brought back memories of trying to squeeze a very grumpy-looking 10lb DS2 into a 'newborn' sized sleepsuit aged about three hours.

They said he'd be about 7lb, the buggers!

I would keep them - i had the opposite problem, a 6.7lb baby and only a couple of tiny sleepsuits, which he threw up all over during our night on the ward. Everything else i had swamped him, my mum had to rush out to next on her way and buy him something to come home in!

Sizes vary so much too, next and m&p come up quite small, but at 13 weeks mine is still in his newborn mothercare stuff! I hardly had any newborn as i didn't think it would last so had to go shopping.

Did you say you had two outfits?
Exchange one!
Then you have one of each size.
And I'm sure you can exchange at mamas and papas once baby arrives.

You did take into account of season? Is baby due soon and they are winter clothes?

I would advise not taking tags off any clothes you buy, and even more so the piles of clothes you will be given.

All baby clothes can be exchanged and you may find you don't actually use half of them....

DS was in newborn size for about 6 weeks. He was 7lb 10oz and long and skinny and lost a lot of weight after he was born. DD was rounder and 7lb 3oz, and was in newborn for about a month.

There's really no rhyme or reason to it. DD1 was 'small' and around 6lb estimated from scans, she was 4lb 11oz born, wore premmie clothes for a long while!

DD2 was on 50th percentile all the way through, born 6lb 4oz, is tracking below 25th percentile, and just coming out of newborn at 8weeks.

We bought newborn size clothes and ended up having to go back and get a smaller size when DS arrived! He was 7lbs, which is a lot smaller than you think. 3-6 months would swamp most newborns.

For my fourth baby, I was very sensible and got all first clothing in 0-3 months...... He was born weighing 11lbs and he only got to wear them for 10 days before he needed the next size up!

No matter how well prepared you think you might be-something will throw a spanner in the works. I'd put money on you putting baby in nice new outfit and as you have the perfect shot-POO EXPLOSION!

Ha ha that made me laugh happy2bhomely. I have probably bought to many clothes but haven't bought any proper outfits like dresses and jeans until 6-9 months

Ds was 8.5 and dd 8.4. Ds never wore newborn whereas dd had to be bought pre-newborn clothes so you never can tell.

This time round I've bought a few newborn bits thinking I can send dh out shopping if needed or order online

None of mine really wore mrwborn, they were all big but also long!! si straight to 0-3mths and for ds4 who was 10lb 13pz it was practically 3-6mth vlothrs syraight off. He was long and had a big head, i remember trying to squeeze him into a 0-3mth outfit that came with a hat, he had the hat on just long enpugh to take a photo and it left a mark on his head as it was too tight.

My 5th baby was a suprise at only 8lb so 0-3mths were a bit big, we got gufts of some newborn stuff but she didnt wear it long.

And actually it is recomended to wash clothes before baby wears them.they are treated with chemicals and startches etc and anyone who has worked in retail says storage is not always great and they would always wash before wearing.

I didn't buy any newborn suits because I thought I wouldn't get enough wear out of them, dd weighed 7lb 11oz and when we put her in her 0-3 month sleepsuit it swamped her, so we had to go out and buy newborn stuff which she wore for about 7 weeks.

You'll definatly get more wear out of the 0-3 month clothes if you choose to exchange them but if you want a nice coming home outfit then just exchange one.

It's one of those things you just can't completely plan for, you can measure right for dates throughout and still have a larger or smaller baby than they thought.

You can't go by weight either, it really is a pure stab in the dark I'm afraid. For example there are 10lb newborns above who were into 3-6 in a week but I've had one who was just moving up to some 0-3 at 10lb and my current 4 month old is 13lb and wearing a mix of newborn and 0-3 with occasional 3-6. It realy does depend on so many things.

mine were both over 9lb, and newborn size was never big enough - they wore 0-1 month M+S stuff for the first 2-3 weeks, then went into 0-3 months from any shops. Luckily I ignored my mum telling me to get newborn sizes as her babies were all tiny - mine take after DH's side it seems!
