Bit shocked, just found out im expecting my first baby.... anyone else new here?

Hi, this is all very new to me but I have friends with kids and they have all talked about how useful mumsnet was for them! So here goes.
I did a clearblue test this morning and it turns out I am 3-4 weeks. I am happy but seriously scared.

Is there anyone out there at the same stage as me? Who might want to share thoughts/experiences etc.

I'm not at the same stage as you but just wanted to say congratulations! This is my first baby and mumsnet has become really addictive since I found it helped me a lot!

I am still in shock to be honest. As I am at such an early stage I can't really tell any friends or family so I came on here for some interaction I guess. There's a million things going through my mind.

After reading some pregnancy sites this morning I worried about some of the stuff I have been eating over Christmas (whilst I was unaware of my pregnancy). I have eaten Brie and Camembert, smoked salmon and have been drinking caffiene and alchohol! I am starting to worry I may have done some harm to baby? Obviously I am going to give all of this stuff up immediately! But should I be worried?

I wouldn't worry Kim. Some caiffeine is ok anyway, most people seem to drink before they find out and if the cheese hasn't made you sick you should be fine!

Congratulations!
I joined mn when I was pg too and it was brilliant. Totally can identify with you being shit scared. We were ttc for 1 month only and DS was the result of literally 1 time. Had persuaded myself that it would take at least 6m as had only just come off the pill. Shocked was the least of my reactions!
Took about 2 weeks for it to settle in and become "real".
Re eating drinking bad stuff, I was 5.5 weeks when I found out and the week before had fallen off the nonsmoking wagon big style - got through about 30 fags and 3 bottles of wine at a company closing down party...
Told the doc at my first appointment and she said that at that stage - infact until implantation which is about 7 weeks - you and the baby are separate from each other and what you consume doesn't affect it.
That was a huuuuuuuuuge relief as had been imagining all sorts!
Hope you're feeling alright so far - not too knackered/sick?

Btw if you have a look in antenatal clubs over in the pregnacy topic you'll find people at te same stage as you.

Wow! Thank you al so much. This advice has already started to put my mind at ease. I am so glad I posted somthing.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my messages! And I will definitely be joining the August 2013 group asap! I am still trying to navigate my way around this site so cheers for pointing me in the right direction. Now all I need to figure out is how on earth I am ever going to hide this from my friends and family until 12 weeks. We have a new years eve party tomorrow and a house party the week after! We got married a few months ago so most people are already actively looking for any tell tale signs of a baby! ... wish me luck :)

Congratulations! And welcome :) and don't worry about the Christmas indulgence, I didn't find out I was pg with my first untill about 11 weeks and had been out for drinks and stuff before i found out and he turned out just fine. Maybe tell your mum and one good friend that can keep a secret, it will make it all the more fun having someone in RL to share the early experiences.
My advice would be to stay away from dr google and don't dwell on horror stories and other people's bad experiences, I did that in my 2nd pregnancy and worried myself sick to the point where I daren't leave the house or move to quickly lol.

I know, Google stories can be so misleading, I might steer clear of it from now on! It seems I can pretty much get all the info I need from here anyway.
Luckily I have one close friend who has a 2 year old girl so I have decided to let her in on our little secret. She's already come in useful today! Following her advise I have now added Folic Acid to my shopping list! :)

I'm due to go out NYE with our friends to a pub, and no idea how to cover up the not drinking thing tbh, am thinking the best thing will be to say I am skint and will buy my own drinks, then get something they cannot tell if there is vodka in or not ;)

Just a note about pregnacare, make sure you take it after your last meal of the day otherwise it can really upset your stomach!

Hi Kim just make sure you take your frolic acid! I got pregnant with no 2 in August. Before finding out I was pregnant I went on a trip to the Maldives and despite having abstained from alcohol all year (bar sister in law's)hen do in mid August - drank a bottle of wine'! Doesn't seemed to have affected baby at all - we did have a couple of scares needing extra tests but all is fine. Am sure you will be okay so don't worry.
Btw- we told family I was pregnant at SIL's wedding and wish I hadn't because I found out she was desperate for a baby and had been trying for ages (she is nearly 40 but still) so wish we had kept schtum till my 12 week scan! If you can keep it quiet do! That's my advice anyway. Congratulations by the way.

Agree with Foo on the folic ('frolic' lol am not dyslexic is my iPhone keypad honest) acid/pregnacare- take it after a meal!

You can eat smoked salmon by the way! I've eaten loads of it - you do need to avoid raw fish - but smoked is fine and if you didn't get ill from the cheese then no worries - just avoid from now on. Having a friend who's got a little one or even further along in their pregnancy is good - as they will have already been given the most up to date advice on what not/what to eat. Was pleased to find out I can eat peanut butter this time round.

Thanks again for all your fab advice! Feeling very relieved to have somewhere to turn. I have been and bought some Pregnacare today which has Folic acid and vitamin D included. I have read that you should wait until you have seen a doctor/midwife before taking any supplements? So I might hold off on taking them until then.

FooFighter, sounds like we will be in the same boat on NY! :) We are going to a friends for a small house party (only 5-6 people). In fact my mate just text me a minute ago excited about the cocktails she will be making!! So god knows how im gonna get away with that?. I might just get the husband to drink them quick whilst nobody is looking! He will be leathered by midnight! haha

By the way, I don't suppose anyone knows whether medical centres are open on a New Years eve/ New Years Day?

Just wanted to say please don't wait to start taking your pregnacare. It's really important to start the folic acid now and pregnacare is entirely safe, you an take it when trying for a baby too. Please do just start taking it, could be ages before you get a midwife appt.
Most gp practices will be open New Year's Eve but not New Year's Day.

Suffering with a terrible cold & cough which has worried me but the comments on this site have put my mind at rest!

hello all. I got my BFP two days ago and am officially 4 weeks today - and due my period on New Year's Day. We got pregnant straight away - only DTD twice one weekend and bam, here we are. Can't quite believe it really, feel a bit of a fraud and as though something will go wrong!! Rally hope it all works out. Not telling anyone in RL yet, going to wait another 2-3 weeks hopefully, if I can hang on that long! SIL had a miscarriage recently so trying to keep it quiet from that side of the family at least. Feel like it will all become more real once I've missed a period. Re the alcohol -I have been accepting wine with gusto to through people off the scent, and then tipping it down the sink when no one is looking, or else swapping glasses with DH, who is getting way more drunk than usual as a result!! Ha ha! Quite funny really. Think I'm going to carry on with that strategy as it seems to be working well. Have also discovered Schloer looks quite like white wine!! I haven't really had many symptoms yet, have you? Seem to be quite moody though!

Right, just eaten so Im gonna start the supplements asap. Thanks very much for the advice tinselandchocs. I was probably over worrying about seeing a GP first.

Amiready, it sounds like you are feeling a lot like myself! We werent even trying. We just had a slight mis-hap and boom. So its all come as a bit of a shock. We both just sat there staring at the test stick, gob smacked this morning! But its starting to feel more real now. Im 100% with you on the 'get the other half drunk' tactic! I might give the sink a few drinks too if I can get away with it.

Congratulations!! I'm currently 7 weeks and found out after a weekend of Christmas dos and wine! Felt awful and a horrible person for damaging my baby. Been booze free since! Avoiding alcohol around friends has not been too much of a problem. I am 'on a diet' and drinking once. Week which is whenever I'm not around whoever I'm with. congratulations again! didn't know about the August 2013 group so see you there! Xx

By the way - there is a whole list of abbreviations under the Mumsnet FAQs column (scroll down to the bottom of any page and look in the column on the far right). It's helped me a whole lot - there is only one I haven't been able to find out which is BESH! Are you guys all booking in with your GP as the next step? Have you told family members yet? I'm not really sure what to do now, except wait! Have ordered some books on Amazon - what to expect when your expecting and a baby names one (or three!). Just trying not to get too excited in case anything goes wrong

Hello Kinjayne and all mumsnetters

I found out I was pregnant yesterday and the due date calculator says September 9th. I have woken up this morning almost over the shock but starting to panic like you ladies about the vino (and a couple of vodkas) over Christmas. We decided to stop using contraception December 16th after ten years together and I thought it would take a few months. How wrong can you be as that's the date the calculator thingy has me conceived at.

I will be going on a folic acid and vitamin d shopping trip today also!

We got married 2 years ago and I must have been asked about 100 times since then when we plan on having little ones and every time I abstained from drink people assuming I must already be pregnant (we live in ireland where drinking is compulsory, even if you are driving the host will still try and force you to have just one or two!) so hopefully they are bored of that line of enquiry by now!

We got our BFP yesterday so excited! Although it feels a bit too good to be true as it was our first cycle and AF is not even due until the weekend (tested on the first response early tests)
