Hi,

I have thrush as a result of the antibiotics I am taking for my abcess (sob- feeling feeling sorry for myself) can I just use the canesten cream or do I need the pessary( I know you can't use the applicator when pregnant) as well to treat anything internal?

I've had thrush twice during this pregnancy (hormones I think!) and both times been prescribed cream and pessary. I used the pessary the first time but decided on trying with just the cream the second time but know I've got the pessary should I need it (plus I know I'll get thrush again at some point, always get a lot when pg!). So I'd say it's up to you and how you feel but yes, don't use the applicator if you do use the pessary.

I was prescribed the plessery and worked much more efficiently for me. Good luck, horrible to feel so sore.

Cream didn't work - I ended up using pessary 5 nights in a row as it just wouldn't go!

I'd ask the advice of a pharmacist. I reckon cream is the safer option if its sufficient to clear it. If that's not successful then try a pessary. Also I reccomend a regular probiotic, especially if you're taking antibiotics as it will help prevent thrush.

I found that they won't let you buy it over the counter - pharmacist said I had to see gp. Midwife told me to breathe in and lie and that as long as you don't use the applicator it's fine.
Can't lie so sent dh in!

Pharmacist wouldn't sell it to me either, so I sent DH too. He was v uncomfortable about that Grin

Im pretty prone to Thrush (and another one who lied to get the pessary cos the cream alone didn't cut it). I also did some research into complementary supplements and found a combination which works for me. So I take tablets of Acidophilius, garlic pearls and cranberry (also prone to UTIs) every day, and when I feel itchy I use a spray called Salcura Topida spray which is amazing. It smells lovely and is very soothing and pleasant to use, i cant recommend it highly enough and i really was at the end of my tether!
