39 weeks - early labour, is it normal for baby to be quiet?

Been having period type pains since yesterday and a few painful contractions last night then it stopped around 4am till 8am then started up around 9am again - although its now back to the lower crampy period pains. This cramping gets worse when am standing and moving so trying to stay active without tiring myself out. Am hoping its the start.
Thing is baby has been quiet today - normally very active, still squirming about but just slower and more sedate?? also bump looks like its dropped really low since yesterday and looks a bit of a funny shape?!
Would this be normal for early labour? i can't remember regarding my last 2 pregnancies as these where a while back.
Thanks

Id get checked out to be on the safe side TBH.

I had a very quiet baby during the last day or two of pregnancy with my first and when he was born it turned out that he had the cord around his neck several times, low apgar. I was very lucky he was ok.

Can you ring your midwife for advice? I think theyd want you to come and be checked.

Impossible to tell over the internet really, but it sounds like the start of labour with my ds2. Call the midwife if you need to. I'm sure babies do go "quiet" just before birth as well, and the dropping could be the head engaging/baby getting into launch position

but there are lots of MNers who know more than I do!

wishing you a quick and easy labour Grin

Oh good luck op, you lucky thing! If he goes quiet again, call in. They should be moving during labour x

Any sign of baby yet OP?

3rdbump · 19/12/2012 19:45

SIGH no sign yet :( all the pains stopped.

This baby is very stoppy starty lately - guess he will come in his own time.
