Help! DH smells really bad!

I have banned garlic from DH as the smell of it on people makes me so nauseous! He's done his best with the odd slip up. Today however he stinks! All I can smell on him is food and onions.

I'm just back from the supermarket and he is the only person who smells this bad. How am I going to share a room with him tonight when he makes me feel so sick.

Depends how you told him really. If you said "you smell awful and make me feel sick" I'd probably look a bit upset too.

Oh you poor thing. I remember that. Unfortunately he needs to appreciate that it's very real for you and it isn't about him (per se!). Emphasise that you do still love him but that you're struggling with your sense of smell right now. I wouldn't mention that it's just him, though!

Does it help if he takes a shower? Has he eaten anything which is very strongly flavoured that he could easily avoid?

I said it as nicely as possible. Have told him its my fault for being so sensitive to it all at the moment.

Although it does piss me off that he moans on about only eating 'bland' food! When I've had HG for the past 5wks. He ate some kind of croquette thing with leeks, onions and cheese at lunchtime and ever since he has been unbearable to be near.

I've suggested to him that he goes and have a nice soak in the bath and have a rest. Secretly in the hope it washes off some of the smell of course this is not how I've sold it to him.

In the early stages I had the same ultra sense of smell .. Made him sleep in the spare room. It wasn't always a bad smell, just too strong and overpowering if he gets too close !

I'm 12 wks, will it get better ? I'm struggling with every food related smell as the day goes on and dh has just cooked tea for ds. Why they couldn't have just had uncooked something I don't know.

I'm hiding upstairs with the windows open for as long as possible. It really is so unpleasant

I had this with DH. I used to wake up in the night retching and send him to sleep in the spare room.

He did get upset, but understood and we survived :)

Why send the poor suffering DH's to the spare room?

Can you not use the spare room yourself? If I feel ill and DP is fucking me off I go to the spare room. I don't make him go.

We don't have a spare room. I'm considering moving ds into our bed for one night and either me or dh having his room. It's either that or I'm on the sofa. I can't kick dh out of his bed because my nose has gone haywire!

Cupcake, i feel your pain, I had the same problem with my DH and it's particularly garlic smells

he didn't take it seriously until i started crying after he ate a falafel (hormones i guess). i haven't shipped him out of the room yet but i did need to sleep on the sofa a for a few nights

get him to brush his teeth and drink peppermint tea or have a peppermint oil capsule, fresh parsley will also reduce the smell

i'm also 12 weeks and hoping for some let up soon :(

I had the same thing - my DH also smokes (outside) but he smelt horrible - and don't get me started on smelly food! One day he cooked sausages that stank so badly I threw up then put Vicks under my nose so I could go downstairs again. Am 19 weeks pg with DC2 now and still not able to eat most foods but the aversion to smells has gone. He's given up smoking (for the 10th time) which does help. Didn't feel thus way with DD1!!!

Same here. Most nights dh and I sleep head to toe cos I get so pissed off with the smells/snorts/sniffles he keeps up all night long. Works for me.

I moved head to toe last night with the window open and it helped a bit. Feeling very sick today, again!this morning at ds school I could tell who had been drinking, who had eaten what and its made me feel so ill

Are you able to eat garlic yourself? You tend not to smell it on people if you have eaten it yourself too.

I had this too. And in my second pregnancy I couldn't stand the smell of DD1 I had to stop using conditioner on her hair just so I could be around her and give her cuddles!

Just tell him he needs to not eat them again for a while. There are things you're not allowed whilst pregnant so he can give up garlic for a few months!

Get him to brush his teeth and / or have a peppermint, which should take the smell away from his breath, which will be the part of him that smells the most of it.

I remember having a go at DH because he was cooking lunches for DS, to put in freezer. He used garlic in most of them and I told him its not fair on me! He is at work all day and I'm the one who has to put them in the microwave and heat them up, then smell garlic on DS breath all day! I realise now how irrational I was being but when you puke immediately on the thought of even opening the freezer it seems the best thing to do is cook bland food. I also couldn't stand the smell of fabric conditioner on DS clothes. I felt very bad that my poor toddler was either getting cuddles in the toilet so I could puke or being avoided for a while (when other people were there!).

I suffered with horrendous nausea from 7 to 14 weeks and even the slightest smell set me off wretching. I had to change our washing powder to unscented, use baby shampoo as there was little smell, send my husband shopping as I couldn't stand the smell of the cold air from the fridges and banned smoked bacon, garlic, onions, curry and boil in the bag rice from the house. It was awful and I really feel for you because there is no let up and even the most patient man would get fed up of being banned from eating anything with a smell. I found that lots of fresh air, Vicks vapour rub under my nose and brushing my teeth helped.

Is there anything scented that you could put on your pillow so that it overpowers your husband's smell? Make sure it is safe for you and baby first though, you have to be careful with essential oils etc

The topping and tailing in bed is helping! I can't stand the smell of washing powders or perfumes, fresh air is the best option.

It's not just his breath it's his general smell that's doing it! He's washing twice a day and understands he needs to stay away from me as horrible ad that is.

He is doing his best I just wish I didn't feel so rubbish all the time
