Maternity jeans

I am on a quest for some nice maternity jeans. Any recommendations? I would ideally like to try on before I buy so any shops with good stocks would be good or websites that I can easily return? I've heard that h&m are good for mat clothes but their mat sizing is confusing me. Also I'm not yet sure whether to get under or over bump, should I get a a pair of each or will I know straight away what I prefer?

I was going to wait til after Xmas to see what goes in sale but after looking on mothercare and mamas and papas sale online its a nightmare seeing something you like but not having your size!!

The best ones I've tried are Next, general reading on here suggests I'm not alone. I'm currently in under bump ones at 21 weeks - over bump just fall down! But I have some over bump ones to move into as I get bigger.

I think you need to try some on as the style that works for you really does depend on your shape. I have a tiny bum and non-existent hips but a big bump - over the bump ones are brilliant, under the bump ones just fall down as there is nothing to hold them up. If you are hippy but still have a small bump, under the bump ones would probably work better.

H&M are good - the cords are particularly nice (and I am not someone who has ever worn cords before). As for size, buy your pre-pregnancy size, but bear in mind that H&M sizing is small (on a par with top shop). Places like Next size very large, so if you are say a 10 in Next you will be a 12/14 in H&M.

Next do great under the bump jeans and H&M are good for over the bump jeans. I found it depends on the stage of pregnancy as to whether under or over the bump are most comfortable.

Under the bump fit better when early pregnant but too big for your own clothes, then when your bump gets bigger over the bump jeans can give a bit of extra support for your bump. I have found that if you get really big at the end, then the under bump jeans become more comfortable again (over the bump sometimes get a bit too tight).

New Look have quite a good selection too if you're looking for something a bit cheaper. I don't know what their returns policy is like though if you want to buy online.

With the style, it also depends how far along you are - I thought under-the-bump jeans were great when I first needed maternity clothes, but as you get bigger it gets more and more difficult to stop them from falling down all the time and then at the end when your bump starts to drop they just dig in too much and can be quite painful. Whereas over-the-bump are useless until your bump is big enough to fill them out.

Another issue is that you can put on weight elsewhere during pregnancy... I had a great pair of Next jeans size 10 until my bum and thighs grew out of them! So if you're between sizes, I'd go for the larger size if they'll stay up.

I agree it depends on how far along you are. My sister has some H&M over the bump ones which are lovely and don't look remotely like maternity jeans. Think they are the skinny ones. I would personally say H&M sizing is really big not small?!

I have an over and an under the bump pair from gap. I find the under the bump more comfy as the over the bump ones sag a bit and I constantly have to pull up my vest top & jumper to readjust the jeans and then tuck it all back in.

This time I also bought the Asos maternity Jeggings which are amazing. They are basically a stretch denim, nothing 'legging-ish' about them at all. I've never had Jeggings before but might buy some for post preg! They are under the bump and do ride down but I just wear a long vest and jumper/cardi/tunic etc on top.

Brilliant thanks everyone. That gives me somewhere to start. I'm only 14 weeks so def not got a huge bump yet but my jeans are very uncomfortable.

New Look do a click and collect service with free delivery so you could order a pair or two online pick them up try them on instore and the return if they don't fit. I get mine from new look as H+M are too long.
In my experience new look and H+M have the best selection of maternity clothes instore to try on anyway though. Our New Look has at least 5 different styles of jeans in at one time, along with work troursers and leggings etc. Theres a good chance of you being able to try on and find out what feels comfy.

100% Next are the best. Got some from Mothercare too but their band isnt half as comfortable. i have 2 Next ones and they have large bands across bump and are SO comfy. they are extremely roomy and forgiving too and been told theyre very flattering. i am considering moving into them for good. whatever size u think they r id get size under. stretchy and fab!

LittlemissChristmas · 18/12/2012 05:32

Fab I'll have a look. Anyone managed to get maternity jeans in the sales after Xmas? x

Just bought from asos. Under bump skinnies are very long and very tight for pre preg size. Mothercare pre preg size fits nicely though, they fine.

dinkystinky · 18/12/2012 09:08

I had a pair from Seraphine with DS2 - pricy but brilliant fit and worked through out pregnancy.

ChestnutsRoastingonaWitchesTit · 18/12/2012 09:17

New Look failed me with their under bump jeans but I've got 2 pairs of skinnies from H&M which go over my bump. They are brilliant, wash well and the black ones are smart enough to wear with heels when going out.

I normally wear a 10 but have moved up to a 12 in maternity wear. Meh.

femmeaufoyer · 18/12/2012 09:24

I have lived in my M&S jeggings during my pregnancy. They are over the bump, which I find much better, under the bump fall down all the time. The material s really thick so they are not at all like leggings. They are just like skinny jeans but comfy! I've got the navy blue and worn with a long shirt, t shirt or Breton top I've felt trendy and comfy all through my pregnancy. They are cheap too, and wash really well.
