Growing out of maternity clothes.

Am 31 weeks, size 16, and have started to grow out of some of my maternity stuff. I don't have a particularly huge belly (although since this is no3 I know it's on it's way) I bought a shirt from gap in size xl about 6 weeks ago and already it's straining over the stomach. How is that meant to work? Surely the whole point of bloody maternity clothes is that they fit an average sized bump right till the end? I don't want to walk round looking like a bag lady in xxxl men's tee shirts for the next 9 weeks, but I'm rather reluctant to buy more clothes for such a short space of time. Im really quite miffed, and while it's a small annoyance when compared to what other women go through, you would think that clothing manufacturers would have some idea just how big a 3rd tri belly can be?

It depends how much weight you have put on. I started in size 8-10 maternity clothes and was wearing size 14 by the end . I put on loads of weight though .. All lost now though ..preen

3rd belly mama here too!

I am so much bigger this time round and have a fair way yet to go. Already people are making comments lie it won't be much longer or remarking that I may be having twins. I found it pretty difficult to find trousers, at 15 weeks I found a pair, 2 sizes up from my normal size from a maternity rang. Now, at 24 weeks they are getting a little uncomfy. Today I am wearing an old pair from my last pregnancy and I am sick of pulling them up because they do not properly cover my arse. I am well was quite a petite size but wonder who on earth are these bloody skinny maternity jeans marketed at?

Have you had a look on e-bay? You might get some good bargains on there for next to nothing.

Sorry that I am no much help but just wanted to join in with you here.

Not put on any weight as yet, still a couple of lb down on pre pregnancy weight due to evil morning sickness. I've actually gone down a size from an 18 to 16 as the 18 is hanging off everywhere except the belly. The gap shirt is fine everywhere else except round the gut, xl is supposed to be a size 18!

Sounds like me. Am usually a 16, 16s are too big but some won't go round my bump now. 4th pregnancy and 26 weeks !

Have you thought of belly bands OP? These were amazing for me in my last pregnancy because I had polyhydramnios and was HUGE. I had a couple of bands in black and white and wore them under a maternity top to make up the difference in gap between the top and trousers. I also undid my trousers and the bump band hid it nicely Grin

Thankfully this time I have been given/lent maternity clothes so I've saved a fortune.

I second the bump bands, I had this with DS (I'm short so the bump went straight out!) and got to the point where I'd only got 3 or 4 weeks to go before mat leave so didn't want to buy new clothes. They were about £8 for a pack of 2 from asda, bargain! Smile

Might be worth buying stuff now so you're not needing to buy it with less than 2 weeks to go like I did! Literally had about 2 outfits that fitted and with a toddler they didn't stay clean for long, I felt so cheated that I wouldn't be wearing them long. My problem was that everything from my 1st pregnancy was enormous and everything I'd bought in my pre-pregnancy maternity size only allowed for extra weight around the bump and I put it on everywhere! I also apparently pile on the weight in the last month.. I think a maternity rental system is a great idea, I considered doing a clothes swap with some other mums/mums to be but it was too much hassle. I'd definitely try the belly bands if I were you.. Shame it's not summer because a lot of shops do cheap boob tubes that are cheaper and work just as well. Gosh over gone on a bit.. My point is if you're going to buy stuff do it now so you can get as much wear out of it as possible.. And buying xxxl stuff won't necessarily work - I did that first time and ended up with a load of stuff that was too big my whole pregnancy and I was massive

I'm 33 weeks with my fourth and up until this week have been chubbier but not really had a bump as such. It seems to have come from no where almost over night. In still not huge - if I wanted to I could easily hide being pregnant, but the maternity trousers I had (over bump ones) are really uncomfortable now. I bought done over bump jeans from matalan that fit quite nicely, and a pack of their maternity tops which are comfortable too. I only have a few bits and pieces but can't justify spending the money on a while new wardrobe because I'm poor as I won't be using it for long enough. I was lucky enough to be sent some maternity clothes from two wonderful mnners which has helped out loads. I'm a size 14 normally, but find it depends on where I shop as to the sizes I need. H&M come up really small I think.

DeathMetalMum · 16/12/2012 21:22

I have been growing out of items from around 25 weeks. A pair of jeans even before then. I am a size 8/10 and pretty much all bump which means it is impossible to find things to fit as nothing is long enough. Can't seem to buy next size up as it is all baggy in other places.

At the moment I am using H+M mama just basic vest tops under most things. They are longer than most things so don't end up flashing my bump and great at the moment for the extra layer. I dont really like bump bands myslef find I am always adjusting them.

Adviceinscotland · 16/12/2012 21:28

I'm 25 weeks, have put no weight on (not much of a achievement considering I am already a size 16) but I am such a awkward shape.

The belly is much bigger but my bum
and legs seem to have shrunk Hmm

I have decided that my uniform for the forseeable future is leggings (normal 16 not maternity) worn under the bump then NEXT maternity tight tops, they are a stretchy t-shirt type top so I've bought every colour and as they stretch I should be ok till full term (just pray no one invites me anywhere formal)
