Hi

I am a type 1 diabetic was diagnosed at 17 and im now 29 so about 12 years or so.

I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child my last hba1c was 5.7% though my control pre pregnancy was alot worse. I had my 1st trimester eye screening at 7 weeks pregnant that showed no changes to my eyes. My second screening last week has resulted in me receiving a letter saying i have some slight early diabetic changes to my eyes but they are not a cause for concern at the moment!!

This has upset me im so worried, what does this mean for me going forward? Is progression inevatible? Will i eventually loose my sight? Can early changes be reversed? Finding it scary if im honest and im waiting on a call back from diabetic nurse to arrange an appointment with her. Would it be worth asking for another screening?

Not pregnant but have a DS and a DD and i have type 1 diabetes...i had exactly the same thing happen to me when i was pregnant! They said i have a few bleeds and some cotton wool spots.

That was 8 years ago and they are just at the stage now where they are going to do laser. I've had diabetes since i was 7, so 30 years so i'm a bit ahead of you there.... What i'm trying to say is that mine did progress but very very slowly and they're certainly not saying i'm going blind :)

Hi please try not to worry. My dh is type 1 and had some changes about 18 months ago. The screening are designed to pick up any minor changes so they can monitor and treat before it becomes a prob. Your hba1c sounds good :). My dh has regular checks and nothing has changed he takes blood pressure meds too and there has been no changes. Hopefully they will be able to set your mind at rest:)

Just to say hello! T1 pregnant diabetic here - second pregnancy too.

Well done on your 5.7 - that's amazing!

I know that if your control has rapidly improved this could be the reason for the slight changes. If there was any cause for concern they WOULD tell you - honestly, they don't mess about with retinal screening.

Hopefully once this baby if yours arrives you will remain in good control and nothing more will come of it.

Come and join us on the T1 diabetic pregnancy thread! I'm sure one of the ladies there will be able to help more,
