Can anyone help...

Ok ladies I have a question, my MW said to have my whooping cough jab at 28 weeks so I just rang my GP to book it in as I'm 26 weeks on Thursday and wanted to make sure I could get an appointment after Christmas and the lady said I need to have it done at 36 weeks as its better to leave it later for the baby! Now I'm a bit confused (doesn't take much at the mo) can anyone advise. Has anyone had there's done and if so how far gone were you.

My midwife told me really early on in my pregnancy (16 weeks I think) to book my whooping cough jab for 28 weeks. This is what I did, so I am now 31 weeks and had mine a few weeks ago. I did ask the nurse who did the injection if it was better to wait and she said no, it is fine as long as it isn't done before 28 weeks.

Will be interested to see what other mums have been told though.

It should be done after 28 Weeks, not necessarily at 28 Weeks.

So this lady at the docs I spoke to is wrong then? I thought it didn't sound right, I'm gonna ring them again and tell them I want it when I'm 28 weeks not 36

I was told anytime between 28 and 36 weeks was fine, its just that I happened to be 28 weeks when I had it.

Seems like everyone I've spoken to has had it at 28 weeks so why should I wait till I'm 36 weeks? I'm worried I'm gonna put my baby in danger x

Having the whooping cough vaccine protects your baby after its born.

It doesn't matter if you have it at 36, 37 or 38 weeks, your baby is getting the same protection as someone who has the vaccine at 28 weeks.

Don't get fretful about it!

Ok that makes me feel bit better knowing that then!! Just thought it was weird how everyone I know that's pregnant is having there's at 28 weeks

I have the nhs whooping cough leaflet in front of me and it says the ideal time for the injections is between 28 and 32 weeks. My midwife said the same thing so I had it at 29 weeks.

Also, worth bearing in mind that if you went into labour a bit early then potentially you might miss having the injection altogether. My first was born at 32 weeks which was unexpected (!) so personally I'd have the injection sooner rather than later.

I did think about that as well if I went into labour early then his not gonna be vaccinated from it which worries me!! I've txt my MW see what she says and if she wants me to have it soon ill have to demand it at the docs

I was told after 28 weeks, and that it took a few weeks for the antibodies to develop so the sooner the better. But my gp is excellent and very aware, at least compared to many others I have seen over the years! See what your midwife says and then if you need to phone up and say that they have insisted on x, so be it. If it was the receptionist you spoke to they are nazis at the best of times. I would try for early in case DC decides to come along, if they are prem they will benefit even more I would think.

Yeah it was the receptionist I spoke to she was a bit of a nazis lol I will see what me says and then ring my GP and demand it as soon as!

The other thing I have done before is to make an appt with the gp as normal, telling the receptionist that it was to do with my pregnancy (nothing more), then when you see the gp say you want more info on the whooping cough jab as you worry about safety, or some story, and then they do the whole reassurance thing, you say fine and they probably do it straight off! This worked a treat so I got my flu jab at 6 weeks instead of waiting to 12 as they normally do it at the hospital when you go for the scan here x

Yes the receptionist is effectively wrong- the advice is 'after 28 weeks'. That's all - not that it's better at x weeks or y weeks. If you want it sooner (I had mine at 29 weeks), ring up and insist on an appt.

Everywhere I look it says to have it between 28-32 weeks, if I went into labour early and didn't have the vaccine I am putting my baby at risk and I am not doing that so I will be demanding it!! snowflakepie that's a very good idea :) I will try that x

FINALLY got this all sorted... rang the docs again spoke to a different lady and she said my MW is right and so she's booked me in to have it at 28 weeks!! pheeeew!! thanks ladies for all your help x
