Nipple pain - what are your remedies?

Whenever my nipples get cold, which is every time I step outside, I get this excruciating stabbing pain in both nipples. It feels like someone is sticking needles in them.

I make sure they are not dry by using bio oil and have a good three layers on but it doesn't seem to help much.

Any better ideas out there?

Oh I used to get this too...its Excruciating! I do feel for you...
I used to dive into cafes and restaurants and hold my nipples under hot air dryers in the loos ... which was very relieving... if an emergency measure...
I don't know what the answer is - perhaps the those hand warmers stuffed down your bra? Might be worth mentioning it to the doc and seeing if they have any suggestions. Its often to do with poor circulation and in my case 'Raynaud's'. I hope someone else comes along with some more helpful tips.

Thanks Agatha, glad I'm not alone in this. I was beginning to wonder if I have some sort of infection.

I get this too, my nipples go white! The only thing that helps me is heat, I wear vests all the time but am thinking of upgrading to thermal ones. Will keep an eye on this thread in case anyone has any great remedies :)

Ooh I get this too, my dh thinks its hilarious as I start rubbing them to make them warm and complaining about my conker nips. I get the train to work so standing on the platform in -2 degree weather is is not helping the situation. Although I mainly only get it in my right one, I had a breast reduction 12 years so have wondering if they haven't plumbed everything back together properly. I'll just have to see if I end up with one ginormous boob when all the milk starts flowing. Isn't being pregnant glamorous Grin

I get this too - yet another of the joys of pregnancy which nobody tells you about! It's worse if they are dry I think, so I'm also keeping up with the Bio Oil. Also loads of layers but if I get cold enough, nothing stops it. I cope with standing on train platforms by trying to subtly rub my boobs with my arms/sleeves. As you do. Xmas Blush

Like all the stealth rubbing Smile. I do it too, but it's very hard when you're on the school run to not look ridiculous.

I wonder if the pain will go away once milk comes in. I hope so.

Is awful. I only get occasionally but makes me cry. Warming up from the inside good - so a cup of tea. Carry a thermos?

Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only one, I got this for first time the other week in Tesco and it was so painful! And I agree, happens when you're cold. Really can only describe it as hot needles being stuck in. What stage are you ladies at, wonder if it means milk is on it's way?! x

Fluffeh · 11/12/2012 08:04

I get this and it does really hurt. I've not found a remedy for it even wearing padded bras and 3 layers of clothing under my coat doesn't help. I'm only 20 weeks so I don't think it can be linked to milk coming in either :(.

NAR4 · 11/12/2012 10:42

Hate to be the bearer of bad news ladies. I got this but only once my milk had come in. I found it made me leak milk as well. It could be a sign of your breasts preparing for feeding.

1978andallthat · 11/12/2012 10:46

Mine happened way before milk came. Though my milk never really stopped I suppose as was bf when I conceived though stopped soon after.

1978 hmmm, this gives me another theory. Are we all second or more time mums. Perhaps the fact we've breasted before means the cold can get into existing holes.

Asked DH to get me some Nipple cream yesterday, he came back with an asda one that is thinner than my current body lotion. Oh we'll my fault for not being more specific. Smile

That should say breast fed.

Not sure as can't remember whether i had this with first. I did get it a lot as a teenager though when very cold and less so as I've got older so always wondered if hormonal. My friend had it lots throughout her first pregnancy though.

I first got it this time when v cold on a blustery beach at about six months pregnant and was in utter tears that it might happen every day but have only had it a couple of times since so far and now 39 weeks...
