Pain under ribs

Im 36 weeks pregnant and my right rib is killing me feels like its extremely bruised very painful getting the odd sneeze isnt helping lol what is it?

I have this too, am only 30 weeks but had it last time too. It's likely just the baby growing and pushing out your ribs - makes them feel bruised!

I had that all of yesterday - was horrible. I took off my bra, which helped, and today I swear my bump looks bigger than yesterday. So yes - I think it's growing. Am 29wks.

Hi love hope this helps but I am 30 weeks and last week I had a terrible sharp pain under my left breast/top of my ribs, it got steadily worse so I went to the gp, she confirmed what many mumsnetters had said that it was rib pain where the babies head is ramming into my ribs, she said it was a strain of muscle and tissue and although painful it would ease pnce bub moved which she has. I felt awlful for bothering her but she said no I was right to get it checked out as you should, it was scary but is much better now, hope this helps love xx

I am 34 weeks and had this for the first time last week for 48 hours. Was a bit worried that it was going to continue for the next 6 weeks! Fortunately it disappeared as soon as it came and I think bump just had her bum or foot lodged under my rib for a bit.

Try sitting and lying in different positions to encourage your little one to move over... Mine was much less painful when I was standing as well.

I hope he/she mvoes soon!

Aw thank you all so much i was panicking dont really know how it had occured and was racking my brain thinking id maybe done something in my sleep. Thank u yummy mummys massive relief. It does hurt a tho no wonder my mum always says to me "and i carried u for nine months with aches and pains, ul see" haha i get her now. Thanks again xxx

I don't want to worry anyone, and it is very likely to just be baby pushing your ribs, but pain under your ribs on the right side can be a symptom of HELLP syndrome, a severe form of pre-eclampsia and is always worth getting checked out by your MW.

Sorry, it's just my best friend could have died from this condition, it annoys me to see so many threads where other posters dismiss it as normal

I am 34 weeks and suffering with rib pain round the back on my right side. Doesn't matter what position I lie or sit in it doesn't seem to help. To top it off I feel like I am carrying a bowling ball in my pelvis, very heavy and it's painful to walk if I have been sitting for a while.

I saw my midwife today and she said that the baby is very low down in my pelvis (hence the bowling ball feeling) and it's quite possible that the pain in my ribs is from a foot or a bit of pain displacement due to the baby growing and pushing against my diaphragm and other bits.

I agree with SevenElves that you should ask your MW about it, it's better to be sure and that's what they are there for

I am 37 weeks and a couple of weeks ago suddenly developed high BP and then they found some protein in my pee and one of the big other things they were asking me was had I had a pain exactly like you described - it can apparently be a symptom of pre-eclampsia, as Seven says. Definitely get it checked out. (I am fine btw, protein went away, now on BP meds until the baby comes)

I dont want to alarm you either but pls get it checked out ASAP.

I had the exact same thing and thought it was the baby but it was HELLP. if I'd left it for another day I might not be here now :(.

Wow, thanks for the warnings, I did not know that. I had the pain again yesterday and it's always on the right hand side. Will check with my midwife who I am seeing today (and make sure I pass the mesage along on similar threads).

The midwife was very nonplussed! She said most likely a leg or foot but also had the usual checks for wee proteins and blood pressure which were all good.

she said that the pain was a bit more like indigestion when it was a preeclampsia precursor. Mine is more like there's something lodged there and eventually goes whereas I guess an eclampsia issue would be there all the time?

still, good to check these things out and thanks to those of you who knew it could be dangerous and educated me. It's a steep learning curve this pregnancy lark!

Oh that's great! I imagine it's only if combined with high BP and protein in pee that they move on to consider it a possible other pre-eclampsia symptom.... Good to get it checked out anyway. Hannah did you get to see your midwife?

This is very common with breech babies, so it's worth mentioning it to your mw and asking if the baby could be breech.
Otherwise I think you're just unlucky.

I had it badly and it turned out my baby was breech but also at a funny angle so there was less room for her head and so it hurt at lot. I hardly had any pain like this with my DD who was always head down and much more upright.
