It's been a bit of a hectic day! I had a suspect UTI a couple of weeks ago but GP wouldn't give me anything as said sample showed raised white cells but didn't develop in the lab.

I've started to get a discharge again and on/off pains in my lower abdomen and lower right hand side. So went back to GP today and they did another dip test on urine and it showed bacteria on result. They are sending it off but in the meantime the GP wants me to take antibiotics.

Went to get prescription and Pharmacist said that I had been given an incorrect antibiotic and wasn't happy to issue it. She then spent 1.5hrs on phone to NHS 24 and the local maternity ward to try and get a new prescription for me. A doctor from the mat ward was okay to do this and I now have Trimethoprim 200mg to take.

I am at 21 weeks and no other real concerns. I just feel very, very scared now as the original prescription could have caused birth defects. Is the antibiotic I have been prescribed okay? Is it correct to take before lab results come back. Please if anyone out there has a medical background or knows about this antibiotic but a stressed out mum to be out of here worry! :)

Quick google says not safe in pregnancy...sorry. Maybe call your GP/NHS again in the morning

I understood trimethoprim should only be taken in the last trimester. It blocks the effects of folic acid iirc. Can you take penicillin? I'd have thought co-amoxiclav would be better (that's what I've had with UTIs when pregnant). I'd contact your GP again tomorrow.

Don't know about trimethoprim but I do know that cefalexin is fine. That's the one most people get prescribed when pregnant.

I have been given cefelaxin and nitroforantion (I think that's how to spell them) both safe in pregnancy used especially for uti and also penicillin can be taken but I've not had whilst pregnant-I did loads of looking up on them because I got worried too!!

I am 17 weeks and was diagnosed with a UTI yesterday. I was prescribed amoxicillin which both the GP and the pharmacist assured me were safe.

Hi did you get a copy of your urine test results? I did on Saturday and saw gp on Tuesday. The letter should say which antibiotics are suitable for the particular organism that was found. I was prescribed amoxicillin but I'm just looking at my results and I can see the other 2 alternatives were trimethoprim and nitrofurantoin. The comments are specific to pregnancy so the lab must have known they were testing a pregnant woman.
I'm not medical so please speak to your gp, your surgery may do phone appointments?

I am 40 weeks and was presribed amoxicillin for an asymptomatic UTI last week - 7 day course - 3 times a day. Feel free to PM for any more info? Good luck and hope you're not feeling too rotten.

Thank you so much everyone. I didn't take it last night and am going to try and speak with maternity unit this morning!
