What's the consensus on alcohol free wine? Most are between 0.2 and 0.5%. I'm in first trimester and not sure I can hack drinking juice all Xmas/New Year. Is is best avoided or so low to be fine for pregnancy?

You can get totally dealcoholised wine too.

The brand I tried (Eisberg) was so disgusting that drinking too much of it wasn't an option. I would say that if you have to drink, have one unit's worth of something really nice a week. At least that way it is easier to keep track of your intake. I also found that I'm used to life without booze now - I do miss it but not in a craving kind of way!

I second that it is horrid so you don't want to drink lots! I drank it to "cover up" for not drinking , however wld have much preferred normal soft drinks!

Sainsbury's do a fake Rose that's not too bad and a v low alcohol cider that is also ok. Both better chilled and with lots of ice.

I drink mocktails, more fun & taste nice.

Sorry don't know much about the wine - but if you like fruit ciders then Kopparberg and Rekordlich do alcohol free versions which taste the same as the alcohol ones - granted they are not much like traditional cider but they are tasty. (I managed to hide the fact I wasn't drinking at the neighbours annual fireworks party by holding onto a few of these during the night!)

Are you worried about the fact there is still some alcohol in it or wondering if it's worth bothering with?

If it's the first, it partly depends on whether you're otherwise avoiding alcohol completely or feel ok having a couple of units a week. The level of alcohol in these wines is very minimal though. 0.5% equates to less than half a unit in a whole bottle.

If the question is where they're worth bothering with, mostly not in my experience. There's a white one called Natureo that you can get in waitrose that I found ok and had a bit when first pregnant but it just wasn't the same. I now don't bother and every now and then have a glass of really nice proper wine.

some alcohol free beers are ok though and the Sainsburys low alcohol cider is quite nice.

I find mixing with sparkling water makes juice more drinkable/less sweet. Haven't found a very nice non-alcoholic wine yet.

GalaxyDisaster · 06/12/2012 15:45

I tried some and it was vile.

Virgin mojitos or tonic with ice and lots of fresh lime juice were much better alcohol replacements. Alcohol free beer (Becks I thnk?) was closer to the real thing.

Then I had a glass of proper fizz on Christmas day.

If you are worrying about the tiny alcohol content, unless you plan on knocking back multiple bottles, it will work out only a unit or so.

Bavarian 0% weissbier is nice. And M&S used to do a rather nice no alcohol brewed fruity beer thing.
