Trisomy 18...what is actually being tested...Age/Blood???

I'm 36 years old and my nuchal test came back with an elevated risk for trisomy 18...I'm not sure if it's more age related or blood related...I have 2 healthy children and never did this test before...I'm not sure if I should have the amnio...I feel like I should, but I'm afraid of the risks??? What do you think???

It's all just risk factors - I've been through this twice & decided on a cvs & then amnio when there was a risk so high I didn't even get the blood test with the nuchal scan (nuchal neck was 5.2mm) plus cvs came back with confined placental mocisisim.

With ds4 my risk was 1:20 but decided that even though the amnio risk of miscarriage was 1:250 (if I got it right!) I didn't want one.

Just depends what you want - if you want to know for sure go for the amnio but if you can manage with the not knowing you don't have the risk of the amnio.

Thanks for the response...do you have children with DS??? I'm concerned since the reports say that the trisomy 18 children usually do not survive infancy...my DS results were fine (1/4,000)...I feel I need to know if there is a severe problem like tri 18...I appreciate your quick info :)

i think with the nuchal fold test, it weighs up maternal age, against the thickness of the skin on the back of the neck, then comes up with a possible risk, plenty of women who are told they are at risk of chromosomal abnormalities, go on to have amnio which is fine, did you have the triple test at the same time? as they will use thaT to basis a result too, so its all the factors combined, it still doesnt mean that you are having a child with edwards syndrome but means that you are higher risk.
do you know what your result was?

hi syd1999 ) my kids don't have ds - but with ds4 I was as prepared as I could be for this. For me it was weighing up what the risks were & how I felt. Good luck xxx
