A very good friend of mine has been trying to conceive for over a year with no success. I found out I'm pregnant with my second this week and would like some advice on how to tell her when the time comes. She lives directly opposite me so I'm already dreading her seeing the midwife coming round or the blue folder before I have the chance to let her know. What should I do?

I'd tell her at the same time as everyone else, don't assume you know how she feels, but you could acknowledge that you have mixed feelings telling her as you hope it happens for her soon. She will be used to other people's pregnancy announcements and will have her own way of dealing with them, just be matter of fact and avoid any tactless comments or gushing sympathy. I ttc dd for 18 months and the worst things were people moaning about being pregnant (though no one knew we were ttc so not their fault I suppose!), it was hard for us when people fell pregnant easily but you know realistically that some people just will.

A couple of things, make sure you tell her first amongst your friends, then there's no way anyone can let the cat out of the bag. Second, tell her in private, preferably by telephone then she can finish the call and get herself together before having to face people.
It's no fun finding out something like this in a room full of people, or worse, someone else mentioning it to you in a room full of people!
I've been there (3 years ttc first baby) and even though I was ecstatic for people who had got pregnant, it still hurt like hell, and I would slink off to lick my wounds in private. Would much have preferred a telephone call, or even a face to face convo one on one.
