Maternity jeans for less than skinny ladies...

I nearly lost it in the New Look changing room last night - not proud.

I recently lost a lot of weight in order to get pregnant and, as a result, still have quite a lot of pairs of jeans in a size up from my own. So I've been wearing those without a problem (except the bum is a bit baggy but then....my actual bum is a bit baggy Wink). But a while ago DP suggested I might try maternity jeans as they'd be comfier with the band across the belly.

So I went into NL last night to try some on but they all seem to be designed to sit snugly under your perfect little bump. I then have two issues with this:

  1. I always had a bump. It was just fat before so when I sit with them underneath it, it just looks as though I'm pushing a fat belly up. Not a good look.
  1. I'm not that pregnant yet. Only 17 weeks. So at the point of needing maternity clothes (just) but not with a nice firm belly that I can wear things under IYKWIM?

Now, granted, NL is not known for their fantastic and well fitting clothes but the style and cut seems to be common to everywhere (wear them snugly and low beneath your bump). Has anyone (maybe with a wee bit paunch on the tummy, like me) found nice comfy jeans that actually sit above the public bone?

Look for over-bump jeans, Next or Mamas and Papas.

Sorry to ask a daft question but are 'over the bump' jeans like these:

Yes! They look nice, the band goes over your bump, they don't always stay up so well, but they are nice and comfy.

I was a chubster pre-preggo and hate underbump currently as I have the dreaded double bump. It will go people tell me :)

openerofjars · 29/11/2012 10:03

I swore by Dorothy Perkins jeans when I was pg: they were the only ones that fit, went over the bump and didn't fall down all the time.

Have a look on the new look website for over the bump - my best pair of jeans were from there.

Under the bump looked shite on me.

Tbh though I lived mainly in leggings from evans

I'm an 18 btw

I stayed in my normal jeans, unbuttoned/zipped, and held up with braces.

The gap was covered by wearing huge pants (or DP's boxers), and long vests.

I appreciate this wouldn't be for everyone, but I'm short and fat, and finding jeans that fit is enough of a problem at the best of times, when pregnant it was impossible.

I got my over the bump ones from debenhams red herring concession. I got them at 12 weeks and am still wearing them at 32 weeks they stay in place are comfy and are boot cut. In fact from under my bump down they are some of the best looking jeans I've had. I think they were £28. I'm usually a 16-18 in trousers but only needed a 14 in these. Wish all jeans were like this!

weeblueberry · 29/11/2012 11:29

Thank you ladies!! I'm definitely going to look into all these options.

sundaesundae I also have the dreaded double bump. I pretty much had it even before I got pregnant it's just that it's far more prominent now. Sad times. I do have this sneaky hope that when I have a full bump, then lose it when baby is born it might go back to just a single belly? Might be a pipe dream though lol.

Will look at DP and Debenhams. Smile And consider the braces option as I'm also short and fat!!

I'll second Next's over-bump jeans. Only issue I've had with them is when sitting down. They're obviously designed for a neat bump rather than one with fat splurging out all over the place, and I find when I sit the bit where jeans and band meet goes right over my lower belly fat and digs in a bit. Easy enough to readjust though, and then very comfortable. I suspect I'd have the same issue with any maternity trousers. Next also made me very happy in size terms - I lost a lot of weight before getting pregnant, so my normal trousers were on the baggy side though I wasn't yet down to a smaller size. Tried a size smaller in maternity jeans, and they fit perfectly and made my bum look great.

StiffyByng · 29/11/2012 16:04

I found it a joy to buy jeans when pregnant as they finally accommodated my big always looks six months gone stomach. I was two sizes smaller in maternity jeans than real ones! The ones I loved were from DP, and had elasticated panels in the sides that expanded, so looked like normal above the hip jeans from the front. Sadly DP seems to have shrunk its maternity range drastically since last time. And that double bump really does turn into a single one!

Splatt34 · 29/11/2012 20:25

i'm 16 weeks size 16/18. in my next under bump ones from last time at the mo, but they fall down constantly. Can't wait til bump is sufficient to put my over bump ones (again next) on. They were the best things I bought last time round.

CitrusyOne · 29/11/2012 20:36

I tried on some new look under bump jeans (I'm a size 16) and I couldn't even get them up my legs let alone anywhere near my bump! Go with leggings- FAR comfier.

Lora1982 · 29/11/2012 21:44

Ive been happy with my asda ones :-D the band on my mamas n papas ones broke first time i tried to pull them up... Not out of fattiness cos they were rubbish. Customer service was good though. But to be honest ive just lived in boden preggo leggings.

On the dbl belly front im 35 wks now and ive got a flabby bit that jiggles under my bump :-D im guessing its there for when the belly drops... Who knows.

DontSayWhatSayPardon · 29/11/2012 21:57

H&m do good over the bump jeans. The dp ones are also ok but quite roomy I've found (I was a size 16 pre pregnancy). Think they'll be good for later on when I get bigger. Absolutely HATE under bump jeans!
