Scan with empty bladder?

LittlemissChristmas · 28/11/2012 13:58

I'm going for a scan this pm. Currently 11weeks. I know I should go with a full bladder but I have horrendous ms and can't even keep water down. So i'm thinking my bladder is prob empty. Will I still be able to see anything?

I always went with a full bladder and was then told to go and empty it as they couldn't see anything. Something to do with the way my womb lies.

If they can't see, they will probably do an internal which requires an empty bladder, so I wouldn't worry.

I was told to drink 1l of water 1hr before my scan Shock
I can't drink 1l in a day let alone an hour before a scan!
Mine is tomorrow, I'll just drink as much as I can and not wee for a couple of hours!
Like others have said internal scans are fine with an empty bladder.

I had the same issue at my 12 week scan. The sonographer asked if i'd been drinking water but when i explained i'd tried but couldn't keep anything down she was fine with that. You could see the baby really clearly and she managed to check everything that needed checking.

I went with an empty bladder, i was so nervous before my 12 week scan i was like a zombie. It was not a problem at all

lookingfoxy · 28/11/2012 15:33

I had an empty bladder yesterday was not a problem.

lotsofcheese · 28/11/2012 18:54

I've had scans at 8,10 & 12 weeks in this pregnancy. Each time I went with a full bladder & each time was told to go to the loo to empty it!!

Don't worry!

LittlemissChristmas · 28/11/2012 19:02

All fine. The consultant actually said a full or empty bladder makes no difference, its really the babies position that affects it.

I was the same as lotsofcheese - I hadn't drunk much water before the scan, but my bladder was too full for them to see properly! I had to go and use the loo before they tried again. You'll be fine!

I have had about eleven scans over four pregnancies and due to the scans either being non routine or me having hyperemesis I never had a full bladder. The only time it was an issue was when I had a low lying placenta at a 20 week scan and they couldn't see whether it was clear of the os but if it seems close they usually do a rescan later on to check anyway (and in most cases it has moved up by then).

I forgot to drink fluids before my scan until I got there, and luckily my scan was delayed by half hour! So I had time to fill it up a little bit... I got perfect scans that came out crystal clear.
As long as you drink something you should be ok!

LetMeAtTheWine · 28/11/2012 21:29

My scan letter actually stated that you did NOT need a full bladder so it can't be that much of a necessity. At least that's how I see it anyway ;)

Lutrine · 28/11/2012 21:36

There was no mention of it before my 12 week one, but the letter for the 20 week one says to drink a pint of clear liquid (no milk allowed) an hour before, very weird!

OxandAssinine · 28/11/2012 21:40

If you're basically fairly slim it doesn't matter, the baby will be easy to see.

MyFriendGoo · 28/11/2012 21:43

I drank a pint and a half of water hour before my 12 week scan and was told my bladder was empty! Confused I got a ticking off (which I'm sure you wouldn't if you had a proper reason) but still got to see the baby. Sure you will be fine x

I was told off for having a full bladder! Apparently the old scanners needed you to have a full bladder, but if your hospital has new scanners, it's not necessary.

crunchingautumnleaves · 28/11/2012 23:18

What did the letter say? If it mentions a full bladder are you any better with tea or fruit juice or maybe even something fizzy? I found lemonade or ginger beer with orange/tropical juice much easier than water. Some people do well with carbonated water (by itself or with fruit juice).
