hi I have been using alberto balsom blueberry shampoo. I just realised that it is has a ginseng extract in it. I am now going crazy as everywhere on line it says pregnant women should not take ginseng. but I can't find information about extracts in shampoo!! I am so worried :'( do you think I am ok? I been using it daily for weeks.....

I'm not an expert but I would hope it would say on the bottle if not safe in preg. I have some bath oils that say on box not to use in preg due to the essential oils in them.

You're not taking it, you're using it on your scalp. Nothing that's a cosmetic product like shampoo can penetrate the skin (which is why you will get precisely the same result from all shampoo regardless of what's in it). You're perfectly safe.

Bluebella · 28/11/2012 10:38

OMG ZuleikaD are you sure!? Your comment has made me so happy, I have been so so so worried about it. The shampoo did fall down over my body in the shower, but got washed off pretty quickly. Are you sure I am ok?:0)

It's fine. Smile

Flisspaps · 28/11/2012 10:41

Perfectly sure, unless you're swigging it from the bottle.

Bluebella · 28/11/2012 10:50

Oh thank you! I am not going to use it again, but this reassures me for what I have used so far :0)

I've just been reading about other harmful ingregiants in shampoo! What shampoo do you use in pregnancy?x

Shampoo cannot penetrate the skin, so it's perfectly ok to use anything you like.

Bluebella · 28/11/2012 14:19

OK, thank you, but how come it says all on google about these chemicals..... this is so confusing and stressful..... :0( thanks for replying, and sorry for being a bother.

STEP AWAY FROM GOOGLE Grin

I used whatever was in the bathroom. Didn't occur to me to look at ingredients.

I ate runny eggs, rare steak and the odd beer.

Please, relax - this is meant to be a happy time, don't heap unnecessary angst on yourself!

ZuleikaD · 28/11/2012 14:25

There are chemicals in shampoo because the entire physical universe is made of chemicals. Grin You don't want to believe everything you read on the internet... if you're really stressed, ask your midwife and she'll reassure you.

Stay away from H2O - everyone who comes into contact with it dies eventually Wink

Do you have your NHS pregnancy book from your MW? There are guidelines in there about what to avoid (mainly food/drink as you actually put that in your body!) Smile

Bluebella · 28/11/2012 14:47

thank you. I haven't had my booking appt yet. I am 5 weeks. I have only just told doctors today and I have to go and fill in a form. I suffered so badly with anxiety on my first pregnancy and was utter hell. I don't want this pregnancy to be the same. :-( than you for reassurance.

Even less reason to worry - up to now your embryo has been living off its yolk, so nothing you ingested by any means will have got to it!

Bluebella · 28/11/2012 16:24

well... I am 5 weekdays 4 days.....does that make a difference?

Flisspaps · 30/11/2012 14:30

None at all. Really, there is NO need to stop using this shampoo 'just in case'.

Honestly, it's not confusing, the things you should probably avoid are really very few and far between. The NHS advice you will get in the book at your booking in appointment can be found here

Step away from google, when you book in tell your MW about the anxiety you encountered in your first pregnancy and see if there are things you can do (not googling!) that will help you to not be so anxious this time around, otherwise the next 8 months are going to be very long :)
