I'm 39+1 and can only assume this has something to do with pregnancy, but maybe not!

Over the weekend I kept having a weird taste in my mouth and my tongue kept feeling furry so I was brushing my teeth constantly trying to get rid of the horrible feeling. My tongue also looked strange and white even after brushing it, so I was thinking. Might have become anaemic again.

Then last night after dinner I thought I had something stuck to my tongue but couldn't move it, so I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror. Now imagine my surprise to find my tongue was peeling! Shock I haven't burnt it recently or been drinking chemicals (!) so I have no idea what has caused it. Confused I had to literally peel off layers of skin, horrible thick layers.

Now this has to be the strangest thing you've heard of during pregnancy, right?! Hmm

I sounds like you have oral thrush to me (I am a midwife)
Have a look in the mirror and see if you have any random white spots on your gums and roof of the mouth. It can be treated really easily with nystatin drops or daktarin gel.

Do you have any symptoms like itching, burning etc ahem, down below? If so get some treatment from your doctor.

All the best and wishing you sort it soon.

I've just had a good look but can't see any white bits, and all the white on my tongue has gone now. No itching or anything down below either. Confused I'll keep my eye out for any of those symptoms though. My sister had thrush in her nipples and my niece had oral thrush until my niece was about 4 months and I can vaguely remember what it looked like in her mouth, so hopefully I'd recognise it if anything appears.

How could I have got it in my mouth if it is thrush?

Ooh, ouch! Does it hurt? Maybe you should go see your doctor?

FWIW, my strange pregnancy symptom is wisdom teeth. When pregnant with DC1 two of the buggers started coming through at about 3 months' pregnant, and took the rest of my pregnancy to finish coming through. Now pregnant with DC2 and another one started coming through at about 3 months and is still coming.

I just thought I was never going to get them as neither my mum or dad have them. They've all had to be removed too as they've all been impacted.

Yes, that is quite strange (and kind of gross).
My strangest symptom was when I was pregnant with my daughter, I used to sometimes ge this clicking sound coming from my bump, it really was most odd!

Could also be a thing called'geographic tongue'. Related to iron deficiency I think. Very odd and very sore(stay off the grapefruit!)

AThingInYourLife · 28/11/2012 07:36

I can beat that!

When I was pregnant with DD1 my head grew! As in, my skull expanded Shock

I got a gap between my front teeth which I had never had before, and it closed up after she was born.

I had geographic tongue in my last pregnancy and although very painful my tongue didn't peel.

Only weird pregnancy symptom I ever get is a craving for certain smells - strong ones like creosote. I find myself making excuses to go to Homebase just to walk down certain aisles!

I'm 39 weeks pg with DC2 and have suffered all sorts of 'horribles' throughout.

I'd say the weirdest was when I awoke last week to a swollen uvula. It's nothing like it sounds....dirty minds Grin.

The uvula is the little 'punch bag' at the back of your throat. Mine most likely became infected due to my run down immune system.

Well I made an appointment but cancelled it because I've got literally no symptoms of anything now, and I've had nothing since the peeling on Monday. It wasn't in the least bit painful, in fact I felt nothing at all. My sister did a spot of googling and found a common theme of people getting it after eating lots of salty food, and I had eaten a whole load of salt and vinegar crisps for some reason, so I'm putting it down to that for now and sticking to chocolate. If it comes back I'll go to the gp.

I must say you're all making me feel far more normal! Wink

And itsallinmyhead I did read that as 'vulva' the first time I read it! Grin

And it's a mind like that that got us all in this predicament in the first place ItsMyLastOne

Glad your symptoms seem to have gone.
