How do I get told when my first scan is?

I am 8 weeks pregnant as of today. Had my first appointment today with a midwife. I was expecting to be told when my first scan is, but I wasn't. When do I find out when it is and how will I be told - will I just get a letter through with the time and date on?

Every area differs but I just had to ring a number, confirm that I wanted a scan and some other details and then got my date/location in the post a week later. This was before I saw my midwife though (when I found out the date, the scan isnt for a couple of weeks)

You can book a private scan yourself - just ring them and tell them - but otherwise your MW will need to refer you. You should get a letter from the ultrasound unit with date and time. Presumably you discussed it with the MW and told her you wanted a scan? If not, then it's worth phoning and making it clear.

When I registered with the hospital they sent me a letter for the booking in appointment (which is what you just had) and a few weeks after I'd been to the midwife they sent a letter with the scan appointment. You can always phone your hospital and ask them.
Congratulations hope your pregnancy goes well Smile

I got a letter 2 weeks after my booking in with my scan date on. Smile I'm in Edinburgh though so it likely varies...

I had to chase mine up. I remember at 11 weeks calling up try and find out. Same day I was sorting out solicitors and estate agents to arrange moving house a week later. Fun day!

Do we need to register ourselves with a hospital then? I've got this confusion too & thought the midwife would sort the hospital reg & scan - I'm not even 100% sure I'm 'allowed' the hospital I want...

you shouldnt need to register with a hospital

midwife should do it

then you will recieve a letter from the place that does the scan with the details

i saw my midwife at 5 weeks, and got the scan date (for 11+3) when i was 7 weeks pg. (my midwife told me over the phone as she called to rearrange my 8 weeks home booking appt)
I got the letter about a week later, but already knew date and time as my midwiife had told me

I think it depends massively on your area and which hospital you want to go to.

With DC1 I had my booking appointment with the midwife at my GP surgery. During that appt we discussed hospitals and I decided which one I wanted. She then called them there & then to book me in for my 12 week scan.

This time, pregnant with DC2 I have chosen a different hospital. So had booking appointment with MW at GP surgery as before, but she couldn't just call that hospital. She faxed them a scan request through and I received an appt through the post.

I have never chosen a hospital

i choose homebirth, so only ever see community midwife Smile

i also wouldnt have a choice, if i were to choose as the only hospital is 45min +++ drive away, so would not choose a hospital that was well over an hours drive away

I live in london and I went to my GP to confirm my pregnancy, few weeks later I got my booking appointment, and scan date letter along with some information in one package.
