Pregnant with Monoamniotic Twins

Hi There,

I am 7 + 3 weeks and found out last week that I am having twins. This was quick a shock but furthermore we are expecting the rare type of identical twins, monoamniotic, which means they share the same inner sac as well as the same outer sack. Apparently only 1% of all twin births are this type and only 10 cases occur in the UK each year.
This might mean I will struggle to find someone UK based in the same boat but wanted to put it out there!
I am feeling quite scared about how the pregnancy will go and the expected complications later on. I have been told I will be monitored every week and most likely will deliver around 32 weeks at the latest.
After having my son in 2009 - easy breazy pregnancy and lovely quick waterbirth in a birthing center - this has all been quite a shock!
Hoping to find some support here, even if just about having twins (daunting in itself!)
Any help or advice much appreciated.

Hi Rowan and cingratulations!

I have 9 month b/g twins, so did not have any of the issues you might face (but plenty more!).

Having twins has been very intense so far but lovely too!

You may want to post in the multiples section under parenting, its where all rhe frazzled multiple mothers hide and support each other, there will be someone with relevant experience to help out! Grin

Great thanks, I will check it out.

Haha Although part of me is scared to hear what they have to say in a way... eeek! :)

Can't help with your situation, I have b/g twins too but welcome to the twin club, only for the incredibly blessed Smile.

Hi. Rowan. My best friend had mono amniotic twins. They are 2.5 now.

Her pregnancy was actually trouble free for her. She had lots of scans to check their cords weren't tangling. She gave birth by c section at 34 weeks.
The consultant didn't want to leave them in any longer due to cord tangle risks.

Twins were 3 pounds 10 and 3 pounds 11. They spent 2 weeks in special care and then went home. They made up weight very quickly.

They're thriving boisterous 2 year olds now!

If you want to pm me with any questions I'm happy to get answers from my friend and pass them on.

Hi MrsBungle,

Thanks for your reply, messages like that are jolly good to hear! I know i'm still very early anyway so anything can happen, but part of me is freaking out, so nice to hear about people who have gotten through it with little complications!

Thanks :)

Yes rowan. Although my friends pregnancy was trouble free she obviously worried the whole time. But as I said everything worked out fine for her :)

Good luck and feel free to pm me if you think of anything you'd like to know. She won't mind answering.

Congratulations!!

I did a quick search, and it looks like someone else has posted recently about this type of twin:

I hope this is of help to you, and all the very best with your pregnancy Smile

Congratulations on your double bump :)

My twin girls are DCDA so no experience of a MCMA pregnancy. 7 weeks is very early on and the separating membrane will be very thin at this point. The membrane will be much more visible at your 12 week scan and you may very well be pregnant with MCDA twins. At my 12 week scan the dividing membrane was still very thin.

My girls are 8 weeks old now and it is so lovely having twins!

Good luck.
